Wood/tree/log ID please

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Wood/tree/log ID please

Morning all

Any idea what species this is likely to be please. No leaves I’m afraid other than the ivy that was growing on it

Cheers

Mark

My initial thought, apple, 25 years old.

Yep, could well be; if it is, it needs to have some sealant (old pva glue for example) slapped on the end grain and then left somewhere nice n'cool for it to season for a few years. It's tough stuff and quite hard to work with; back in days of yore, they used to make the heads of golf driving clubs from it - Rob

Big Soft Moose, one time contributor here had some of an apple tree I cut down and that was destined to make replacement gear teeth in a mill that was being restored. I've lost contact with Pete to know if it was successfully used or not.

Wasn’t there a “Moose Hunt” set up for him after he was found to have double identities??
I think he reappeared for a time but hasn’t posted for a while.
