Any idea what species this is likely to be please. No leaves I’m afraid other than the ivy that was growing on it

Yep, could well be; if it is, it needs to have some sealant (old pva glue for example) slapped on the end grain and then left somewhere nice n'cool for it to season for a few years. It's tough stuff and quite hard to work with; back in days of yore, they used to make the heads of golf driving clubs from it - Rob
