It’s getting closer

Just downloaded the new NHS Covid 19 app and our area risk is 'medium' but I haven't checked how many new infections there are. Last time I looked it wasn't many - Rob

A sense of perspective on the risk.....

Infections are running at about 5 or 6% of the level they were at in March, and sensible people now know what they need to do to avoid catching the bug.

Loaded up the NHS Covid app yesterday. Stayed in all day. So did LOML. This morning I get an Exposure Notification. Go figure. Flakey if you ask me. :eusa-think:

Did anyone come to the house? postman, delivery drivers, trades etc.

As with anything new I'm a late adopter and wait for a couple recalls, updates etc so I'll wait and see.

Nope. No-one. But if they did they should not have been out as they had tested positive. But since the App only came out yesterday, there's no way I reckon that the system would have caught up that fast.

Agreed Mike, sensible folk (thats thee, me and everyone else on WH2) know what to do to stop, or drastically reduce the chances of catching the bug. It's the eejits who aren't sensible and don't take the necessary precautions who catch it and pass it on - Rob

Mike do you have a source for those % ?

This is my goto site for UK/global stats https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/uk/

and the number of UK cases now compared to March looks to be higher. EG

Yes, I'm curious where Mike has got those figures from because all my research suggests that daily cases now is higher than in March ..although there is the caveat that we are doing more testing now and so the comparison isn't 100% valid.

I can't quite get my head round comparing the numbers with and without testing.

I presume in March say it was obvious that people had it from the basic symptoms alone as we did not hear about tests at all. Now it people have sypmtoms, they (sometimes) get tested to confirm they have it and presumable some who are tested end up being clear. If people don't have symptoms they are unlikely to be test positive. Therefore that suggests perhaps recent numbers could be marginally lower as a result of testing?

I read today that the french contact tracing app has been less than successful. since June only 2.4 million downloads (pop 67 million) estimated 700,000 have since been uninstalled and “many” apps have never been switched on. Total notifications just 200.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I can't find it now, but it was from an Imperial College research paper which estimated there were about 100,000 new cases per day when the infection was at its peak in March. The only people tested at the time were those who ended up in hospital, so the graphs that everyone is publishing and commenting on are in effect comparing the infection rate now with the hospitalisation rate in March.

I agree with Mike and recommend folks sift through the ONS bulletins. They appear about every 5-7 days and if you are canny enough, provide MUCH more information than the 'digested-to-LCD-level' stuff pushed out by Da Beeb etc.

Just had an email from NHS plugging the tracing app.

"The app will help you to understand and manage your personal risk and reduce the spread of Coronavirus. The more people who use it, the more effective it will be.

The app requires operating system 13.5 or above if you have an Apple iPhone. It requires Android 6.0 or above if you have an Android phone."

Why do the cup1d s7un7s commission these packages to only run on the more modern phones. Surely if they want as many people to use the app it makes sense to make it compatible with the oldest possible operating systems. Both Mrs and I are classed with a degree of vulnerability - she much more than I but neither of our smart phones will run the app.

This question was posed to Mark Hancock the other day on the Beeb or Ch4 news and he more or less laughed it off and suggested that we all ought to upgrade to more modern 'phones. Me and SWIMBO have both got iPhone7's so it will run, but we've just deleted the app pending an 'improvement' as it's NFG :D - Rob

I think it's inherent in the type of Bluetooth connectivity that it uses to minimise battery drain. Some sort of low-power Bluetooth, I believe.

That does sound plausible. I usually turn off BT on my older Iphone 5s as it does affect battery life quite markedly.

I’m right on the very edge of that dark area in Warrington. Currently 4 cases in our ‘village’ of 10,000 people but other areas of us only 3/4 miles away are rising.
