Anyone made a bike roller?

Anyone made a bike roller?

Postby Andyp » 24 Mar 2020, 09:42

Do you think I could drop four of these into a simple wooden frame to make a bike roller?

Professional physio off limits here and cycling is a perfect exercise for a daughter as it does impose strain on the joints.

Anyone made anything similar?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

The GCN channel on Youtube made a home-made indoor trainer using similar rollers. There's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't work well. However, riding on rollers isn't completely straightforward. Getting started and getting off can be a challenge. Also, you may need heavier duty tyres than normal.

Thanks Mike, I'll have a look at their vid.

Nearly all of our bikes have all purpose tires for the gravel and stone tracks we have around here. Getting on an off was something that bothered me especially as my daughter has problems with balance anyway.
Has always amazed me that someone who cannot stand on one leg (either leg) for more than a couple of seconds has no problem riding a bike.

A roller frame would be easier to make but I could sacrifice one bike and jack the rear up and fix the front which would probably be more stable and easier for her to get on and off.

Limited resources here and only online shopping of course :eusa-think:

After doing a lash up prototype to find if the idea is suitable, then I think the rollers are going to need some decent bearings to allow for the combination of load and rotation speed.
Ball races are cheap as chips on ebay and you can stack several in a row to clamp in a wooden frame without a great deal of "engineering".

As Mike says, rollers are difficult to get going on even for experienced road cyclists, it's just a weird feeling.

Perhaps a 'turbo trainer' style like you mention, with the rear wheel rolling but the front fixed, might be a better option. Adding some resistance will be the challenge.

If only you lived close and the world hadn't shut up shop, I have an old one (fully working) that I was going to stick on ebay and get a couple of quid back for. You could have had it!

This is the route I would go in your circumstances. Crashing off the side of the rollers two or three times is liable to put her off completely.

We’ve got one of these. Very stable and the resistance is easily adjusted. We paid about £40 at the time but it was a few years ago. We use standard road tyres with it and not had any issues. It folds up pretty small when not in use as well.

thanks guys

Yep a fixed rear wheel stand is defo preferable methinks.

Something like this should be doable.

I this stage I am not going to complicate by trying to add resistance not really necessary.

Daughter had a bad night yesterday so plenty of TLC today. Hope to start hacking stuff tomorrow.

Just ordered a couple of BMX wheel pegs which will make mounting the bike to the frame a cinch, I hope.
