Online Quality Butcher Supplies

Postby Chris101 » 01 Dec 2020, 21:14

Not a huge fan of christmas shopping, decorations, carols, cards, all the faff.
But I do love Christmas day. Cooking an invested meal, drinking good wine with my Dad, ok, the kids opening their presents is okay.
Seeing as how Christmas is going to be a single family affair at ours this year due to being careful and so on, thought I'd spoil myself (and the immediate family of course! It's all about them! Honest!) With a special bit of meat.
I've already bought the wine. :eusa-pray:
Does anyone have a cracking source of reliably excellent online meat they can share? Time is drawing on.

Cheers
Chris

Wow. Both recommendations look amazing.
Malc I will definitely let you know so she gets the points if thats the case, madness not too.
@ Roger, no venison, not because I don't love it but I'm just really after beef for this one. I had wagyu just once as steak and it was fantastic. But with two young kids I really want a joint to carve. I'm not precious with my kids but they need all the spectacle they can get this year as younguns. It's been a long year and I'm careful to try not to spoil my kids but they deserve a break tbh.
Chances are a Grandparent or two will pop round for a walk (outside) so maybe I can feed them beef sandwiches with horseradish? ;)
Did all the present shopping today online. Just the cooking to look forward to now. And the wine. Did I mention the wine? :D

I've used https://www.campbellsmeat.com/ a couple of times and I would recommend them. I've just received my years supply of haggis, black pudding and sausage. Their customer service is also brilliant.
I don't see any referral bonus on their website but they have a £15 discount on the first order if it's over £60.

There appear to be some excellent butchers in Hertfordshire according to Google. I'm surprised you're buying online rather than looking for quality meat in person. It's a good opportunity to treat yourself to a test sample in advance of the big day too. ;)

Just the two of us this year and bit of deer is what we're having. A small haunch was on offer at Waitrose a couple of weeks ago so a chunk is now in the bottom of the freezer. We used to eat the occasional bit of beef but haven't done so for ages as we much prefer venison - Rob

The best christmas dinner we ever did was venison. The worst evening meal we ever did for guests was venison. Our view, based on a limited sample size, is that venison is something of a gamble.I think we're having a goose this year, which means decent roast potatoes for months! :eusa-dance: :eusa-dance:

Are you on Facebook? If so, join "giving up the game" you can buy direct from stalkers. There's also game dealers that will butcher and post. That's for venison.

During the season there's always purple giving away pheasant, partridge, duck etc.

Cheers, I might have to get the wife to join it, personally i don't do social media.

I might give pipers farm a call, i normally buy whole canons and joints, but all these online places seem to just do essentially pre-packaged stuff.

I have bought on-line meat quite a bit, but only very specialist things like Wagyu, suckling pig and Iberico pork. In general I find on-lien suppliers overpriced and the quality patchy. I've tried a few well known ones and the best and most reliable quality I have discovered is https://www.meatmeathome.com

Where we live in Tier 3 Kent (bizarre as we have minimal covid cases in our area) we have three or four proper butchers who can tell you exactly where the meat comes from, how it is aged, etc. In recent years I have found beef to be hit and miss in terms of quality (texture and flavour). Hence I hardly eat it now. Occasionally I buy a whole fillet and make a Wellington. That is fairly foolproof.

Interesting that you have gone for Goose Mike. We are usually in Germany in December (not this year due to Covid) and get a goose most years from a farmer near our place over there. Goose has a lot more flavour than turkey I think, and has the advantage that there is not much meat on it so you are not constantly trying to find a use for the leftovers.

A friend of mine swears by Venison. But he is a roadkill collector (they are like rabbits near where he lives in Gomshall, Surrey and he skins, butchers and hangs them himself. It is surprisingly hard to find something like a haunch of Venison in Kent.

There is one butcher near us that always has a queue outside which is a decent indication of his quality.
He lists the local farms were the meat originates.
He also sells mutton.
All good signs IMHO.

As an aside, ALDI meat is far superior to Tesco and the others.

Does anyone else here like beef heart?

Best by far in my opinion is http://www.turnerandgeorge.co.uk Either visit their tiny shop in Angel or a very good delivery service.

I use http://www.thegingerpig.co.uk a lot, mostly because they are local and I tend not to plan ahead. They have a nationwide delivery service.

Depends where you are in Herts but I've used http://www.bobsfamilybutchers.co.uk/ a few times, mostly for specialised BBQ cuts but they seem to have a good range. They are in Hatfield.

Others I've heard are good but haven't personally used:

http://www.meatmattersltd.co.uk/ Small range of Welsh meats but excellent quality I hear.

http://www.hgwalter.com Good range of quality meats

I used to live in the far north of Scotland, a friend used to "help" the laird to keep his deer population in check :eusa-whistle: . I prefer to remain ignorant , but noticed he had some high powered spots on his 4x4 ;)

Used to keep us well supplied with bambi burgers.

I'd love to try it but it's taken me 25 years of effort to get His Lordship to accept liver! Now he can't get enough of it. The next step for me is ox tail and I might have a go at heart after that.
