A Gentleman

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

A Gentleman

A gentleman and a scholar!

A couple of years ago when refurbishing my Hegner scroll saws, I needed some parts.

Easy, look up the manufacturer site and buy.

NOT so easy.

Hegner do not sell to people like me, only to their agents.
So where are the agents?
UK, USA & Oz

Let’s look at Hegner UK.
Not a bad site, lets you select the machine model, then displays a diagram of the machine with numbered parts right down to the washers.

So create an account, select the parts into the trolley and proceed to checkout.
I can pay by Mastercard, not a problem.

THEY DO NOT SHIP TO SOUTH AFRICA!!!! (bunch of w*ankers)

A gentleman on this site very kindly offered to post me the spares.
Problem how do I then pay for the postage?
To his Paypal account? Does not work from SA!!!

O, sh1t.

Next option was to ask someone where I did contract work who will be visiting family in UK or going over on business.
Long story short, which is how I obtained the required spares.

Move on a couple of years.

I needed some tension springs for both machines and blade holders for thin blades.

Approached the gentleman who again was willing to post the spares, and this time I could make alternate arrangements for payment of postage.

Ordered and paid Hegner UK, delivered to Romsey.
Posted at Whitenap PO, delivered to RM Langley for forwarding overseas, and on 09 January leaving the UK and now on its way to SA. (Not sure with C-19 where they found a Jet-Plane)
“Leaving on a jet plane ………” with apologies to John Denver

Bob (Minch) you are a gentleman and a scholar!
A very big thank you.

Cheers
Phil

Phil, you are not the only one to have benefited in that way and Bob is not the only one in this parish to have offered similar help to us living outside of the UK who are becoming increasingly frustrated by international shipping.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Top man is Bob. That’s what I love about this forum, plenty of us will to help likeminded folk in a myriad of ways. Long may it continue.
Cheers

This isn't about Bob, and I've no wish to hijack his thread, but it is a nice place to share my story of being genuinely....touched (?)....'heart-warmed'(?) (not sure of the right word), by the community that's across the couple of woodworking forums we all frequent.

I started a thread 'over there' asking for advice on buying hardwoods, explaining that I'd never done it before, what were realistic prices, that sort of thing.

I received a pm from an established member who offered to let me order timber, through his work account, (with a timber yard that was being discussed), in the hope I'd get it cheaper.
He offered to help me prep any sawn timber I bought on his machines, and he provided his phone number should I need to call him for any further assistance.

Honestly..... I was blown away

:obscene-drinkingcheers: cheers John :)

Bob, if it left Saturday should arrive Sunday if direct flight UK to RSA (hopefully) But SA shuts down for the weekend. No action till Monday.

I did a local SAPO search on international postage and it took me back to the RM site.

Our SAPO is not the greatest, and bankrupt, just another cash guzzling SOE. They also enjoy going on annual strikes.

Will keep checking status.

On another thread somewhere there is criticism of RM. The UK'ers just don't appreciate how lucky they are to have a decent functioning postal service.
Would RM maybe think of opening up a branch here in SA? :D
