Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

Picked up reference to this from the FT at the weekend. Sarah Lucas is the artist. This stuff is MDF and concrete. The two-seater on the right costs £8500.

I'm off to the builder's merchants to see what I can knock up.

I have a mate that makes things from concrete, we even did a kitchen together, half oak tops and half concrete. Is apt more involved than you think.

Agreed £8500 is alot for the little one I can see the big one easily being that price.

Small one

Concrete £300 x4 = £1200
Mdf must be 22mm x2 £60
Other support timbers £50
Misc £50
Labour for non concrete £700
Designer extra on top fee £1000
Total £3060.

Still alot for what it is. Not that nice either. You wouldn't want to sit on it for long.

The irony for me Roger is as a young man I used to work on building sites, come breakfast time if you could find an old chair, saw horse or upturned bucket to sit on you'd done well.
A cold pile of blocks whilst functional was never my favourite option, I don't think I'll be splashing out 8.5 K for the pleasure, limited edition or nay.

I'd add that the blocks look to me at least more like a Thermalite block as opposed to a more open faced breeze block, merely going by the photographs. If this is the case they don't appear to even know what they are charging these large sums of money for.

Kind regards,

Frank.

It's Art. (*)

Price is therefore based on the reputation of the Artist, and the estimated wealth of the purchaser demographic.

Neither skill, materials nor labour are factors.

Yes and remember the original link came from the FT, so there's your likely target market in one juicy stereotype. If you read the How To Spend It supplement the FT produces every now and then you'd see this stuff as a bit of a bargain... £100k on a watch... £250k music system...

The art world is a funny old world.

Good luck to her. Although 25 years ago, I would have been frustrated to see her publicity as my internal fire was profusely burning to break into the art world with some of my creations, but it never happened. Various reasons why probably; (1) my creations weren't good enough; (2) I didn't meet/know the right people (3) bad business/marketing skills (4) it just wasn't meant to be or maybe a mixture of all of it. My biggest hunger years ago was to be recognised as an artist/designer/maker and now, I'm just happy to be earning a reasonable living in the craft of woodworking. Those hungers have pretty much died away for me, but I still feel that occasional bout of excitement 8-)

I agree though, £8,500 for the two seater is quite ridiculous, especially considering what's involved to make one. As bugbear writes, these figures will be based on the reputation of the artist and the wealth of the purchaser.

Absolutely ridiculous :|

To put things in perspective, this clock is aimed at a similar market and costs around £40k. I can guarantee that the amount of work involved is much much more than 5x the concrete MDF saet!

Given the choice, and the money, I know which I'd prefer to have.

To be completely honest neither would make their way into my house regardless of cost.

I dunno about the mechanism but surely the clock case is only a couple of days work.

Cheers

Like I said above, it is about target market. Plenty of people around for whom £8,500 is very little money, so if it turns out to be rubbish they will just go out and buy something different. Now what you guys who do this for a living need to workout is what those people might be interested in buying.

My guess would be a combination of (2) and (3), rather than (1). What I have seen on here that you have made has been very good.

I would love to have the clock but I am not sure I would be allowed to put in the house.
