A Little Brag

Hang up your Chisels and Plane blades and take a load off with a recently turned goblet of your favourite poison, in the lounge of our Gentlemen's (and ladies) Club.

No matter how much pleasure you get from passively listening to music, the pleasure is enhanced enormously by becoming a musician yourself. You hear so much more than you did before! Not only that, there are health benefits, especially as you grow older. One of the most surprising aspects I’ve discovered is how it expands your creative horizons in other fields too. It’s striking how many successful people in technical walks of life are also musicians. Indeed, there is at least one multinational accountancy firm that looks to recruit artists and musicians rather than accountants because almost anyone can be trained to be an accountant but it’s so much harder to stimulate creativity.

So if you’ve always fancied learning to play an instrument, go for it! The benefits are enormous, even for novices. It’s even possible to find free instruction for some instruments if you get involved with an established band. Our local silver band, for instance, welcomes newbies of any age and will lend them instruments whilst laying on free teaching. Plus you get the fun of being in a band. There are also organisations such as the University of the Third Age which have peer to peer tuition.

Music is fun, it’s stimulating, it’s sociable and it’s for everyone. Try it!
