Earthquake

Wow the earth just moved for us and I was downstairs!

The whole house shook - it seems that Winchester has just suffered a 2.8 Earthquake - probably the most exciting thing that's happened here for years?

I've been in two. They're most disconcerting, aren't they.

One was in Perth when I was a child (8 or 10, I suppose), and that one split highways in half, brought down bridges and so on. It smashed an expensive Spode plate set in our house, that's all. The other one, amusingly, was when I was at uni the first time around, and I was sitting in a lecture on seismology at the time. It barely rattled the blinds, but even that felt weird.

If you have a play with the timeline at the bottom of the page you can see how many have occurred.

It was officially recorded as a 2.9 with its epicentre 3km below Winchester @18:30hrs
No damage that I've heard of but it shook the walls and windows. We are not far from an Army Camp and thought initially it might have been an explosion!

We've got oil under our village which is being pumped out but no fracking.

I'm kind of surprised you could feel a 2.9 earthquake, it must have been really close. Mike's got it right, they can be pretty disconcerting especially if they last long enough for you to realize what is happening before they're over. I think the biggest one I've felt was the 6.2 Morgan Hill earthquake in 1984, southeast of San Francisco. I was about 50 miles away, though, so no damage where I was, but it definitely seem to go on for a looooooong time.
