Delayed notification emails

I have my preferences set to get email notification when a new post is made in a thread I'm following.

I've noticed that it is not unusual for these to be arriving 9-10hrs late.

Sometimes I will have already looked at the post online and yet I still get the notification which suggests to me that the forum is sending them out promptly and they are delayed en-route.

Anyone else seeing this?

Bob

Don't use them personally but let me do so on here now, then you reply and I'll let you know…

Previous notification form this test have been instant but for the last one, it set off at 11.17 and got to me at 12.27 - positively speedy compared to 9 hrs last night.

Years ago there was a story about NTL and Yahoo hating each other and delaying mail but that was probably a tech issue rather than open warfare.

Maybe it is my ISP? anyone else on Virginmedia (ntlworld flavour) having problems?

Self to self is instant.

Notification of your post took 33 minutes

Ebay/paypal seem to be near instant after a purchase too.

Bob

@ andy but the EU is not quite 3rd world - yet

Could just be poor peering between whoever the host use as their ISP and your ISP, possibly… <sticks finger in the air…>

Forward me one of the notifications, as an attachment, not forward the actual email (if that makes sense…) and I will see in the headers if there's anything obviously odd going on.

I get the occasional unreasonable delay on virgin emails so it is probably that.

Most of the time instant but now and then one or many hours delayed. Error messages on send receive are not unknown too. I don't use ntlworld mail for many things now. plan is to eventually use only my domain email then I'll have the option to switch ISP sometime instead of merely threaten virgin with leaving and fish for a discount.

Thanks Robert,
You are probably correct VM do seem to have a problem running an email service. Since they took the job away from Google, their spam filter is much less effective.

I do have my own domain name but so far have not bitten the bullet and switched to it for my main email address. I've had the NTL one since the days of 56k dial up and have never paid for any upgrade. Only accepting the speed and BB upgrades supplied FOC. I seem to get a pretty good deal from NTL
If they ever try and force a change to Virgin email addresses, that might be the time to jump to *@minchin.org.uk

You should check what you are paying for virginmedia by having a read on the digital spy forum. Some people seem to get very good deals.

My experience is that you get a discount based on who you talk to! The sales people can't give deals. they can only change your package. Retentions are the people with the power to make deals - and then staff in the same department give different offers so you may need to call more than once. Retentions are hidden under change of address on the phone menu so people don't find them too easy.

My 2x TV boxes with sports, phone with weekend calls, and 100Mb broadband had gone up to just over £100/month. After a couple of calls it is now £22 less a month for a year.
