A China Cabinet

Postby Dave R » 21 Aug 2014, 18:17

Or maybe more correctly, a cabinet made in China. This was made in Shaghai about 1840. I came a cross a photo of the cabinet and got to wondering about how to draw the gridwork. After figuring out the pattern, drawing it was actually pretty simple. I might do a blog post to show how I did it.

Here's a close up of the door. The original has metal screen behind the wooden grid. I need to look for a make an appropriate texture but for now the dark gray will have to do.

Well its an impressive cabinet and yet another great drawing. I would lose the will to live with all those joints, not one for the make it sometime list.

Thanks Dave. I'm with you on making those grids in the shop. Seems like a job for an apprentice. :D

I vaguely remember seeing a video of a craftsman making one of them?

I keep thinking there is something wong with the pattern but can't quite out my finger on it.
The 1 unit squares seem out of place?

Bob, you'll have to take that up with the guy who built it. He might be around 200 years old now and is probably senile. :D

Actually, you are correct. I missed one little detail. I'll fix it, though. ;)

In case there's any interest, I made a tutorial video showing how I drew the latticework on this cabinet.

The same process could be used to draw divided light windows or the cames for leaded glass windows. I expect you can come up with a few other uses, too.

I also decided it would look better in Chinese red. :D

I could have used it on this cabinet if I'd thought of it back then.
