Hi Rod,

Thank you. I think you put it very well. From my experience making plans for Fine Woodworking, it seems many woodworkers get too dependent on having exact dimensions for everything and don't want to use their own judgement and calibrated good eye to figure out what looks right. I think there'd be a whole lot more originality if they did learn to work with less information in plans.

Sorry Dave, I wasn't at all clear there, yes I meant that the actual design of the piece isn't to my taste but I like what you've done in terms of the design and layout of the 'plan'. The aged plan style I like a lot.

Hi Mark,

No worries. Thanks for the clarification, though.

I agree, just needs a coffee cup ring on the bottom corner.

Now all I need is a 3D printer that will take Dave's beautiful designs and output the real item ...

Seriously I wonder if anyone has taken the output from a SU drawing and converted it into instructions for a CNC machine?

I used to draw in AutoCad then export dxf to the manufacturing software and program the CNC punch presses from it so I don't see why not for sketchup as it can do DXF as well I believe.

Roger, CNC-made and 3D printed stuff is quite common from SketchUp. When I was at 3D Basecamp a few weeks ago I saw a number of examples including this foosball table. The plywood pieces are all CNC cut, the players and the scoring beads are 3D printed, and the player faces and the playing field were drawn in SketchUp and printed.

There were many other examples, too.

I've had a couple of 3D prints made. One was of a MkII Penguin Donkey. This was done a few years ago.

There are some extensions that are useful for making models ready for CNC production and even a couple that will create G-code. If you have to go through a DXF or DWG file before going to the CNC machine, you have to have SketchUp Pro but with the G-code output, you can do it with SketchUp Make.

I don't doubt you for one moment, Dave, but for a tavern table it looks mighty flimsy !

It's designed to break away when one drunk tosses another drunk across the pub. :D

Is Art Deco more your style?

the drawer pulls are interesting and I wish I could get a closer look at them. the center section is a turned bobbin with 10 beads running around. The ends of the bobbin have a shallow recess. The other two parts are just slender cones set so they angle back toward the drawer front. I can't see in the reference image how they were attached to the drawers. I assume a screw into the bobbin but beyond that I can't see any fixings.

I like the cabinet and drawers but not too keen on the legs - perhaps they should have gone the full width - that's where sketchup scores?

True, it would be easy to change the legs in SketchUp. i just drew it the way the original was made. I'm not a fan of the black lacquer myself. that sort of finish seems to show wear all too easily.

Those drawer handles do look interesting, the contrast with the black makes them appear to almost float. I think the black stain reminds me of a lot of black ash chip board that was very fashionable sometime ago, not to my taste.

Here's a nightstand from 18th Century France. I don't think it would be out of place in most bedrooms today. The original was made of walnut with a white marble top.

I think apart from the base, it looks very modern.

Lummy! Nice! Makes my shed look naive, as they say in artistic circles.

It looks like a very useful wall cabinet but I wouldn't make it for myself as it wouldn't go with any of our existing styles of rooms.

I think that means you should get busy and make some new furniture it would go with. :D

Sadly, for me, we had already furnished our house before I got back into woodworking - other than DIY stuff - that's why most of the things I've made have been for the garden.
I'm getting a bit too long in the tooth to contemplate refurnishing but I make the odd things for my daughters and Grandkids.
