Wow! You've been busy!!

I've been looking round for animation plug-ins. I'll get one sorted, soon.

Did you look at Fredo's Animator? I haven't had time to play with it but it looks great. You can get it from Sketchucation.

Yes. I reckon that's what I'll be using. Still working on my 'shop build, but with darker evenings now, I've got time to try it out.

Does the table have drop in sections?

Yes, two leaves go into the center section. Or you could use just one.

Here's another table with an extending top. I used the same extension component from the previous table although I need to trim it down a little.

A guy on another woodworking forum was looking for plans for a pedestal dining table. I told him if he didn't find any, it wouldn't be difficult to make plans. After I wrote it, I decided I should see if I could actually draw one. A trip to my mother-in-law's house to crawl on her dining room floor and then this:

The plans aren't finished yet but that shouldn't be difficult.

What do you think about kerf-bent aprons?

I've only done kerf bending on my guitar and those were tiny and easy to bend. How well will that length bend round in a semi-circle?

Good question, Malcolm. A few years ago my brother built a demilune console table and kery-bent the apron for it. It isn't as long as the aprons on this table, though. The trick with kerf bending is to figure out the difference in length of the inside curve and the outside curve. Then remove that amount of wood from the inside with equally spaced saw kerfs.

Maybe it would be better to do bent laminations.

There's a steam bending post elsewhere going on at the moment, but it's a whole piece rather than laminations.

Yeah. I thought about steam bending, too. It's a bit of a production and you'd need to figure out how much to over bend to add to the form to compensate for the spring back. I suppose you could do a combination of steam and kerf bending.

It can work nicely......but overcut one of the kerfs, or if the wood is just being deliberately spiteful, and you can end up with a smooth curve interrupted by an obvious angled bend.

I would have thought that where the edge is not on show, like in the apron of that extending table, cold formng with thin laminations would be far easier to make the curve than kerf or steam bending. In my experience with cold forming there is very little if any spring back too.

For the curved back of a windsor chair cold forming would not be so elegant though.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Nice.

Are you aware that Trimble are not continuing with the Free/Make version, or have I mis-understood that in the press?

Hi Malcolm,

Yes. I'm very aware of Trimble's decision to discontinue updating SketchUp Make. Instead of a free desktop client version, they have made available SketchUp Free which is cloud based and runs in your browser. SketchUp 2017 Make will continue to be available for download for those that want a locally installed version. Currently SketchUp Free is not as powerful as Make but development will continue and more features will be added. One of the things that's nice about SketchUp Free is that it'll run on Linux or in Chrome OS which the downloaded versions wouldn't.

Hi Dave,

Thanks. That clarifies it for me, and I hope for other users on the forum. I forgot that I already have a SU Free account. I'll have to fire it up again.

I'll also work in 2017 until the online version catches up.

Doodling in SketchUp Free just to see how it went. I used most of the same modeling workflow I would have used in the desktop version. The only things I missed were some custom keyboard shortcuts and the Trim and Keep extension. Since the latter is a Pro-only thing anyhow, it wouldn't have been available in Make either. All in all, I would say it's decent enough and I expect we'll see added features on a continuing basis. And with existing Make versions on locally installed, it's all good.

Gustav Stickley bed from about 1900. This design would work in many homes today and it wouldn't be a difficult build.

Like the 'plainness' of it.

When I can extract digit one day I want to make a bed base and headboard for the single bed, to get rid of the crappy base.
The footend I would cut down to the level where the mattress will lie. Easier when trying to make up the bed.
Also maybe a slide out draw for blankets.

Phil, lowering the foot board could easily be done. Or you could add another box spring or two. :D

As for the drawer underneath, I would be inclined to go with a flat box on wheels to avoid complicating the bed design. I suppose a box could be made that hangs from a few of the slats, though. Hmmm.... Off to play.

How about something like this? The box and drawers would be lightly constructed with nothing more than needed. Probably dust panels on top which I omitted. L-brackets on the ends of the box would hook over slats and be secured with small screws. Or the slats could located on pegs in the ledger boards on the side rails.

Image

The box clears the floor by about 20mm and I've drawn it with four drawers, two on each side. Two long drawers could also be used.
