Yeah. I guess I wouldn't expect it to work on Kindle either.

Robert, you should be able to zoom with the mouse wheel and orbit by pressing the mouse wheel down just like in SketchUp.

never thought to try that and yes it works too. I don't have full orbit like in sketchup. i can't look up from underneath for example.

You can't look up its skirt because I set the camera so it won't go below the ground plane. That's a feature in the viewer. There's not much to see under there, anyway.

Excellent! It does seem to fail for older browsers/OS that don't support WebGL but I expect most people are keeping up reasonably well.

I just checked on my iPhone and no luck there either but it is a old 3GS and won't run the newer OS versions.

I'll go back under my Luddite stone

I was poking through some older models and came across this music stand for two. It is based on a plan I found in a book of furniture plans that is over 100 years old.

Seems kind of heavy and imposing for a music stand. I generally think of music stands as very light and spindly creatures.

I could see the base of this being used for an outfeed support roller if you liked to put that much effort into shop accessories.

Or how about a standing desk for a notebook computer?

Ha! When W3.11 was all the rage, I and my employers were on the first generation of Macs, Macplus, Se30 etc. W3.11 only got used for controlling hardware then usually under DOS.
Prior to that I was programming intel 4004 and 8008 processors the forerunners of the 8080.

I think I have a dual boot Win98/XP machine somewhere if the HD has not seized up. It does not get a lot of use!

Mark, I don't know that they'd be any tighter than any other barrel or coopered project. You could cut the staves out fairly easily on the tablesaw. I could see making a cradle to hold the pieces so you could run a router with a slot cutter around the inside for the front and back pieces. Probably the trickiest part for most of us hobbyists would be making the metal bands to go round. I would envision welded circles that are heated to expand them and driven onto the canteen. I would think it would be much like putting an iron tyre on a wooden wagon wheel.

Here's a Stickley Umbrella Stand. I doodled this out for a guy who was trying to get dimensions from a photo of an original. It was a simple matter to import the photo into SketchUp and let SketchUp provide the dimensions.

This is a cabinet on stand in the style of James Krenov.

Hi Dave

I'm interested in this comment. Not something I've seen before, the importing of a photo, can you point me in the direction of where to look for this feature?

Hi Mark,

The feature is called Match Photo. For info, start with the online help files (go to the Help menu to access it) and also see this old thing I did on it.

A few things to keep in mind:

It doesn't work well on images that have been cropped or on ones that have had perspective correction applied. unfortunately that means that it can be difficult to find useful images on line. It doesn't work well when you have straight on views because you can't easily set up the perspective lines. A good clear 3/4 view is best.
You need to have some good straight lines on the piece to set the perspective lines to. it's best if those lines are in the same vertical plane. The straight line could be an imaginary line drawn between to points in the photo that you know are in the same vertical plane.

I don't use it often but it is handy sometimes.

Have fun with it.

Just because it's been too quiet, here are a couple more SketchUp doodles.

Here's a coffee table/bench I designed in the Mid-Century Modern style. The cushions store in the ends of the table and there's a space to display things under the glass.

This is a small drop leaf table based upon one made in Sweden in the 1950s.

And a little toy rocking horse.

Very nice, as ever, Dave. When you do these do you go the whole way and draw the joints (mortice/tenon etc)?

Thank you, Roger.

As for the joinery, I don't always draw it. It kind of depends upon the model. The four tables in the post I made above this most recent one all have the joinery detailed. The drop leaf table and rocking horse are also detailed to that level. The coffee table with the cushions doesn't have the joinery done yet but the horizontal stretchers between the legs are separate components and it would be a simple matter to add the appropriate details. The box portion is draw as a single entity except for the glass. It would be easy enough to redraw as separate parts which I would do if I was going to create a plan for it.
