An older one just because.

This is a chair based on a photo sent to me by a SketchUp user in Peru who wanted help figuring out how to draw it.

And here's a chair similar to ones we had when I was growing up. They were great out in the shade of a big tree. Unfortunately these days they'd probably be frowned upon because some kid would get his fingers pinched and the parents would sue the maker of the chair. If I'd gotten my fingers pinched my parents would have told me that's what I get for putting my fingers where they don't belong. ;)

Bottom one is what we in the UK call a traditional 'deck chair', oft seen on the beaches of Morecambe and Blackpool along with full body bathing suits and donkey rides! :D

It's good to see they are still around somewhere.

Actually, these days, I'd have the same problem I have with Adirondack chairs. I'd need a crane to help me out of it.

This was my warm-up exercise this morning. It's based on a Swedish pine bench from the 18th century. The lid is attached with long iron strap hinges and there's storage inside. The legs extend all the way to the top edge of the side panels so the storage is divided into three sections. I think it would be a nice project but it should be made from wide pine boards. I don't even know if I could get them around here.

looks nice but I can see a flaw in the plan if you sit on one end :)

Robert, I think you'd have to be a rather massive fellow to get it to tip you on the floor. There's only about 10 inches between the very end of the top and the foot.

Looking at that last picture, the legs look a bit odd, are they straight boards or two in a v shape?

Dave

I think they are flat but with bottom edge slightly scalloped to form two feet on each leg.

I might adapt such a design to make a coffee table- food for thought....

Each leg is a single board that runs up inside the case. Each has an arched relief to create two feet on the floor at each end.

Edit: Bob is correct.

Italian bedside commodes dated to around 1735 on a late 19th Century rug from Turkey. I made the rug using the same plugin I used for the live edge slab. And I did a tutorial on drawing the legs of the tables in case anyone is interested in that.

A modernist school bench by Ernesto Gallardo, Mexico 1949.

Original from 1949. Looks like a great idea for a garden bench.

I'm not replying to every post here but did want to assure you that I am looking with interest each time you do so please keep them coming :)

I do check out the tutorial links too.

Can't say I like this bench though...

Hi Robert,

I'm glad you like the tutorial links when they come around.

I don't know if I like this bench all that much, either. Evidently it was a good, rather utilitarian design that served its purpose in the school where it was used. An original version of the bench is listed for sale for $3900 so someone thinks it's worth something.

Yes. Someone has a pretty high opinion of it.

So here's a sketch I did yesterday of an armoire (or would you call it a cupboard?) that was made in Canada c.1880. I added the woman for some scale. This piece is 5'8" tall. Even I would have to stand on a stool to see the bottom of the drawers.

How about some child-sized chairs from Germany, c. 1967?

Image

The originals were in pine but I thought red oak would look good.

These would be a pretty easy project for a grandfather.
