Flight of Six

Just doodling.

I was given a set of six flight glasses and I was thinking of making a tray to hold them.

Very nice Dave.

With some minor mods the tray would look good with Sushi on it. 8-)

Thanks Phil. I was thinking about that when I drew it. I was toying with the idea of running the rails across the grain of the top and putting them in with sliding dovetails.

Those glasses on a board remind me of a bar that did a beer tasting menu. You could pick from a menu of beer styles and get 3 x 1/3rd pint glasses of different craft beers served on a board.

is there a transparency setting to make the glasses as see through as that or are they just wire frames?

I've not always got something to say when you post these 'scribbles' but they are interesting for the drawing detail as well as the item content. Thanks for keeping the thread going.

Hi Robert,

The real version of those glasses came from a brewery not too far from here. They are used for samples. A flight is a great option when you can't decide which one you want.

As for the SketchUp model of the glasses, I made a PNG of the brewery's logo with the background set to be transparent. The logo image isn't a whole lot larger than the logo itself. I created a region on the glass to apply the image. It sort of looks like a rectangle drawn on the glass. The edges prevent the texture from repeating around the glass. Then I imported the image as a texture so I could apply it to the glass. For the rest of the surfaces I applied a translucent texture from the Glass library and edited it so its opacity was set to 0. Once a material is in the In Model materials library, you can edit it to change color and opacity.

Here's another view of the glasses.

I just don't understand or recognise "flight" in this context.
Is a collective noun for glasses?

Googling for a solution does not seem to lead me to a style of glass being called a flight glass
and neither does it seem to be related to glasses used during a flight.

I'm trying but failing completely on this one.

Dave, thanks for the links (never too old to learn! )

As a staunch one brand Lager drinker, I think this is an excellent idea to expand my horizon, and will forward the links to the local craft brewers.
In terms of beer my earth is very flat

I had some really excellent German beer 8-) at a German restaurant close by, very tall glass and slightly cloudy. Will remember to get the name next time we go again.

Hi Phil,

I'm glad that helps to put some bubbles in your beer world. :) Brewing is a big thing here in the US. There's at least four brew pubs here in our small city. F-Town Brewing is in another small city not far away.

You might like to keep track of and rate the beers you rent. There's an interesting app called Untappd that helps. Since I started using it, I've logged 116 unique beers. Most are local.

Cheers! :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Dave, we have far less craft brewers here in RSA.

I will look for the app.

I used to brew my own beer about 45 years ago.
The biggest problem was drinking before the expiry date and to get empty bottles to recycle.
The start up cost is quite high as you buy beer in quart bottles in a crate of 24. There is a deposit on the bottles as well as the crate. Not worthwhile brewing for pint bottles.

It was a real PITA having to clean and sterilise the bottles each time, as well as having the right place and space to brew. We now live in a retirement estate and there is certainly no space here to even think of doing it. Maybe a small still? 8-)

I buy Namibian Breweries products, Windhoek Premium Lager, Windhoek Draught, and then I recently came across their Tafel Lager - all 440ml. So I now buy 2 cases of each - 24*6=144/2=72 days stock.
Per ml the Tafel is the lowest cost at ZAR0.0142/ml, then the Draught at ZAR0.0189/ml and the Lager at ZAR0.0275/ml

Thanks for that Phil. Now I can tell my wife not to complain about that beer. Without it she'd have a bald husband! :D
