Robert, the gong is 16 inches in dia. Does that help for scale. If it was a table top thing I believe you'd have to call it a "ging" not a "gong".

The sketchy line styles can be used in SketchUp Make but the tool for making your own only comes with SketchUp Pro. There are a number of sketchy styles included with SketchUp Make and you can get more of them. I've got a bunch of my styles available here and there are some from others, too. The shadow thing is done by taking a shadows only export from SketchUp and running it through a freeware program called Fotosketcher (Windows only at this point) andthen combining the result with the sketchy style.

Rod, does your much small version do what it says? If so, I should get one. I suppose, though, if I wanted it to bring whisky, it would need to be bagpipes. :D

Sleepless night and needed something quiet to do. How about a Gothic-Revival dinner gong from your side of the pond c.1880? Those crazy Victorians knew how to get a party started.

Nice sketch, like the shadows.

It won't work in our house.

As a kid we had a small silver bell which summoned us to dinner.

It wouldn't work well in my house, either. Neither would a small bell.

When a friend of mine was a child, her father had a whistle from a steam locomotive up on the roof of his garage he used to call the kids for dinner. He connected it to an air compressor. It worked well but on more than one occasion the 5:15 made an emergency stop when the engineer heard that whistle.

I haven't shared any drawings for awhile and in case there's anyone still needing kill a few seconds...

A queen-sized bed.

A side table based on one from 1950s Italy.

A quickie sketch to show a jig for cutting dovetails on the bandsaw. The jig was designed by someone else. I was just presenting a modification to allow the angled guide to be locked in position at the request of another woodworker.

This is a wall cabinet designed by Nancy Hiller. She was inspired by the work of Victorian Gothic Revival architect and designer Bruce Talbert

Another view.

This was posted in the September/October 2018 Fine Woodworking as a download.

The design could also lend itself to a wall clock with a glass panel in the door to see a pendulum.

Although nothing to do with woodworking, here's a current work in progress. It's a WWII vintage code key. This one was made by Lionel which is more famous for electric trains. I was gifted with two of them. One is a rare one in its U.S. Army Signal Corps box.

I only know Morse code for one four letter word and it may be in the swear filter. Funny the things you remember from schooldays ... .... .. _

I don't always comment but I like seeing your postings.

Thanks Robert.

Helping out a friend who is new to woodworking. He wanted some shelves to hold some standard sized boxes. I designed this for him. Trying to keep him away from construction lumber and stretch him a tiny bit with some loose tenon joinery.

That looks useful, but that has a good collection of stuff stored on it, careful not to lose them.

Good stuff as always Dave, thanks for sharing.

I love the code key! Love stuff like that. I hope you have them on display and not hidden away in the attic!

My Dad was a MOP in the RAF in Basra. He still remembers a fair bit and certainly recognised my mobile's incoming message tone ...--...

I was thinking that maybe I should have designed in some arrangement for locking it up to protect the stuff. :D

Thanks Mark. I don't have them on display currently but I was thinking about doing so. I was even thinking of hooking one up to a battery and LED so it could be used. I'd hookup a buzzer or something but my son would be playing with it all the time.

Here are a couple of tilt top tables I modeled recently for Fine Woodworking. On the left, Tom McLaughlin's take on a Shaker-inspired tilt top table, and on the right, Will Myers's version of a wine tasting table from Tryon Palace in New Bern, North Carolina.
