What does? SketchUp? Not really. Part of the problem is the user interface on the iPad is too clumsy for this kind of thing. There have been requests to have SketchUp work on iPads but it isn't really there.

Came across some photos of a bench made by NK in Sweden in the 40's. It's a knock-down design. Shades of Ikea? It looks like a nice project that most of us could pull off in our shops.

One last one for 2019.

This case piece is based on one designed for the concessions building in Mother Neff State Park in Texas in 1938. The original was built in pine. I expect probably southern yellow pine.

Thanks Mark. Wish I could claim the design. ;)

More images for the bored.

This is a bed for which I did construction plans awhile back. It is based on beds designed by Greene & Greene for the Gamble House in Pasadena, California.

Image

Recently a fellow contacted me and indicated he wants to build a king sized version of the bed. That adds 16 inches to the width. His original intent was just to make the central panels wider, thusly:
Image

I'm not very fond of that idea. There's not enough added width to add another spindle at each lift so after playing around with the design and look at other pieces designed by the Greene Bros. I thought maybe this would work.

Sorry Dave but I think you have posted the same picture twice for the wider bed?

Well I think breaking the big panel up looks much better.

I looked last night and thought I was too tired to spot the difference :)

A coffer. Based on Nancy Hiller's rendition of one by Ernest Gimson who moved from London to the rural Cotswolds region with Sidney and Ernest Barnsley in 1893.

I need to make some new oak materials for this one.

I’d never heard of him but Gimson was a very prolific maker (from Google).

I remember seeing an old chest like that on Jersey, the carved panel had significant details which the women playing the role of the good wife explained in detail to us.

Thanks for sharing that guys. I'd heard of the Barnsleys but not Gimson. I guess I should do more research.

A model I did in a live online demo/teaching session for a professional woodworker in northern California.
Image
This dining chair was designed by Danish master woodworker Tage Frid.

Image

And this is a model of Thomas Jeverson's book boxes or book presses.
Image

Jefferson had something on the order of 7000 books stored in cases like these. When he "ceded" his books to the Library of Congress in 1815. he stuffed paper into the boxes and nailed boards on the front and sent them on their way.

They have an interested mitered half tail at the front instead of the traditional half pin.

Nice models as always Dave. I like watching Frid’s videos but I’m really not sure that flat seat looks that comfortable.

Thanks.

the seat has a little bit of and angle to it so it isn't perfectly horizontal. I imagine a person could make the front legs just a wee bit longer to add more dump in the seat. You could make the seat cushion thicker, too.

Funny story about Tage Frid. I met him back in the early 80s when I was taking some woodworking classes while in Fine Art school. He came in and gave a lecture and demonsteration to my class. He did a demo where he hand cut dovetails which was interesting to watch. When he finished and put the joint together he looked up and scanned around the room clearly looking for something. The professor asked him what he was after and he responded, "A dovetail hammer." That had all of us including the professor puzzled. Then Frid broke into a big smile and went over to the hand tool wall and grabbed a claw hammer. He went back over to the bench and beat on one of the pins of his dovetail joint. Then he held up the hammer and with a grin said, "Dovetail hammer!"

:D

A collection of some the Adirondack chairs and related pieces I've modeled over the years.
Image

How do you pronounce Adirondack?

A weird counter-height drop leaf table I did for some guy based on his general design.

And if you're really, really bored and you need something to kill 20 minutes, here's a tutorial I did showing how I model screw threads in SketchUp.
