The best I can do without a hosting site is to see if you can see this image in my DB account.

I don't know how the setup works and if you end being able to see all my DB files like I used to with some of your PB accounts.

Just started fitting insulation blocks into the roof structure before sheathing.

Looking good Malc.

I can see the pic by 'right-click open in new tab'.

Opens ok in Tapatalk but I see you still haven't covered the roof, just tarpaulins.

Thanks, Gents

I was trying to embed the link so the image showed here, but I've not solved that one yet.

Yes, still tarpaulins, but 3 sets of rafters have insulation blocks stuffed in and sealed with foam. I've started on the next pair already today. It's expected to rain heavily tomorrow.

I've come across a problem with the insulation and think I've found a solution.

The foam blocks are 120mm. They were a pallet of seconds half the normal price and in 1200 x 1200 boards instead of 2400. So the pallet met my needs in quantity and the smaller boards were easier to handle and store.

But.... the rafters are 145mm deep and so there is only a 20mm ventilation gap between the top of the insulation and the top of the rafter. All advice says that the gap should be 50mm to permit ventilation to remove moist air to prevent condensation and potential rot.

So... I have lots of offcuts of 95 and 146 and even 225 by 45. I will rip up lengths to 30mm thick to raise the rafters edge to the 50mm. I will fix these on top of the rafters and leave gaps between short lengths so that there could be lateral ventilation as well as up and over the ridge. I will not add to the ridge beam so that there will be a gap to top over there, and I plan to have a hole at the top of each gable as well as some in the eves so that whichever direction the wind comes, I should get a throughput of ventilation between the insulation and the roof sheathing.

Please don't try any more Malc. :D
Certainly a while back we had huge problems with the forum software and people who did photo hosting via Dropbox. It slowed down to a crawl and we never really found out why.

Reached a milestone today. Finished insulting the roof structure.

It's a good job i have no photo host, 'cos it doesn't look pretty with all the expanding foam dripping down, and nothing was straight. But it's done, and now I'm looking for a long enough weather window to get the roof sheathed.

BTW, 12 4x4 leftover sheets of insulation.

Go to the For Sale thread.

Just testing postim.org anonymously!!!

Seems to work.

Insulation and counter battening done.

For those who like me were concerned about ventilating the roof structure, counter battening appears to be the solution.

I've already sheathed to the structure with OSB, photos later, and a gap at the top aids ventilation, which will be under a steel sheet ridge that is not tight fitting.

So here's one side sheathed.

Image

I set up a string along the ridge to try and keep the top of the OSB sheets straight!

Image

It was nearly straight, the line of sheets, that is!!

Image

That gap at the top forms part of the roofing ventilation. It will be under the Metrotile Aquapan ridge which gives it space to breathe.

Et voila! All done.

Image

I had help from my usual mate. I'm blooming' lucky. He's living with leukaemia and considers a day with me as good therapy after a day flat out from the chemo.

We made a small safety feature to help keep the sheets on the roof as we pushed them up. We screwed a lump of 2x1 to each rafter ned so that we pushed the sheet over them and they were hooked up there. Then we could get up and move them about without risk of them sliding off.

I have had to plan to do everything on my own; all the construction processes, then if a mate manages to give me a day, then stuff gets done 5 times as quick!

Had a big clearout day today. Took all the offcuts of PIR to the tip - £3.60 - deemed to be less than one sheet. Good result. Managed to pass all the unused sheets to a plumber/builder tradesman who I've built a good working relationship with.

Next job - I've got to work on the gable and eaves details before I put on the Aquapan roofing.

Cheers, Andy.

Been lucky. I keep choosing dry weather windows and then chucking a tarp over the rafter structure, the insulation in the rafter structure, the counter battening and now over the sheathing. There have been a few leaks through the tarp which then dribbled through to the inside, but all through this summer, I've been really lucky.

I'll be glad when I can get the aquapan on it and not have guy ropes all over that part of the garden!!

Well, I was going to show a little progress today, but postimage seems to have stopped working for me!

My mate came today, and so we have completed the gable ends, put some insect mesh under the eaves and gables and finished screwing all the sheathing. The whole building feels a really rigid structure now.

We've still got a little more meshing to go, and then we've got to Aquapan the roof, including some cover flashing on the gables which will need bending, folding and cutting to fit. That'll be another new skill I've got to learn.

Postimage seems to be working again!!

Gable end.

Image

Fold and cut the Aquapan cover flashings for the gable ends.

Image

And start fitting the flashings and Aquapan barge boards.

Image

For those of you curious, the tarp is still on the roof because the ridge is ventilated and we were expecting a downpour yesterday. I've gone away from the guy rope method to the brick weight method of holding the tarp to the roof!

Thanks, Chaps.

That's the cover flashing and Aquapan bargeboards from Metrotile. One could say they're a bit pricey for a DIY, but they are exactly that, DIY roof parts. It goes together like a kit, almost, so a DIYer can do it on their own.

Looking great Malcolm, it's s real milestone when the roof is on and you can start getting rid of the tarps! Sorry been offline for a bit, but kept tabs on the progress. I don't envy you building during this "summer" either - better weather in April
