Morning all. Spent an hour trying to get a single screw out of the door yesterday to take it off to trim down. The screws the fitter used look like SS but are, in reality, soft cheese!

Eventually got it, and a couple more he had shredded, out by cutting a slot in them with a cutting disc in a dremel clone.

Now my question for you chaps, how do I work out what size the screws are to buy high quality SS ones of the same gauge?

Comparison with others would be easy but I presume that is not an option for you?
For a CSK screw in a hinge arguably the key thing is for it to fit the recess in the hinge.
If you can measure the head diameter. I can compare with my modest stock and report back.

Also put silicone on the threads before you screw them in.

I could Bob but was hoping for some clever method that would enable me to order online as in person shopping time is rare.

I’ll try and measure when I get back from school drop off.

You're on a hiding to nothing to get an exact fit. CSK screws have different head angles and head diameters. A 4mm from Toolstation will probably be different across their range depending on whether they are Torz, PZ, Philips etc.

There should be enough room in the hinge to take a range of screw head shapes. I'd measure the diameter of the hole in the hinge and go from there.

It’s more the size of the thread I was thinking of so there’s no slop in the grip.

If you don't mind a mismatched head then put the next diameter thread up to get a good grip.

Typically a 100 mm hinge would use a no 10 screw and as long as possible without hitting the brickwork.

Poke a matchstick in to take up the slop. Works a treat

In my usual limited experience all stainless steel screws are very soft. Can you replace with bolts. Still stainless but with their extra bulk might be stronger.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

A bit of bamboo chopstick or skewer gives a very tight grip if you are out of matches.

I've found the toolstation offering of stainless screws to be good providing you do a decent sized pilot hole and lube the screw thread up with a candle. Perhaps a screw a tad longer would provide a bit extra grip, if you've lost some by the thread not lining quite up.
If it's a 3 inch hinge it'll like be 4x30 or 4x40 just to be sure. A give inch hinge 5x30 or 5x40. It's good seeing you out and about in the shop

Thanks Coley. It's good to have found my mojo again after a good few stressful months with both work and family. I needed to break the cycle and have thankfully managed to do so and am making great time now!

It really helps having my mate Mark being as enthusiastic as he is to help, doing all the electrics and alarm for me and helping to drive me on.

I'm actually really excited now I've got the door off. I will get it trimmed down and re-mounted today and at that point I am secure and can start moving stuff in, which is the really exciting part! :obscene-drinkingcheers:

I don’t like using SS screws unless their use is dictated by the situation and then using pilot holes etc. I recently repaired an oak gate and three of the SS screw heads stripped off despite taking “precautions”.

Somewhere I’ve a set of screw removers which from distant memory were never that successful.

Ditto - I have never managed to get screw removers to work properly - always assumed it was my cackhandedness though! Best set I have had has a reverse thread on it - drill a pilot hole in the stuck screw and then screw the extractor into the stuck screw, which due to the reverse thread actually unscrews it. The type with a flange don't seem to work for me.

Great to see progress on your shop - keep it up! A heater, a kettle and a comfortable seat and you could move in ;)

I agree with some of the previous comments in that I wouldn’t use SS unless the situation dictated it such as green oak or salt water. My house renovation I’m currently doing has a lot of external oak meaning I’ve used SS screws from numerous brands and all sizes. They are all softer and more prone to breaking that anything zinc plated in my experience. Their plus point is there lack of corrosion not their strength so unless you need to use them in a corrosive situation I’d use zinc plated every time. Wurth are probably the best brand I’ve used if you do go SS but I’ve used plenty of ownbrands from the likes of screwfix and toolstation as well

Thanks all

I only mentioned SS because that's what he's used, but I guess that's why they've gone south... I'll use something stronger instead. :obscene-drinkingcheers:

My first workshop injury this afternoon!

Had the doors off to trim them down, cleaning up an inside corner with a razor sharp chisel, was talking to my mate and not concentrating, slipped...

Image

Doesn’t look like much but is about 5mm or more deep and opened up like a crushed grape! Loooooots of claret too!

This is about 5 hours later as I’ve just changed the dressing.

Gaffer tape is pretty good, you need to stop the leak before the blood stains the work.

Sucked it for a while, spitting the blood (I believe there is some truth that saliva is a good cleanser of wounds), then a tight wrap of kitchen roll and electrical tape to stem the flow (it was flowing quite freely!!) while I searched for something more medical.

Eventually plumped for a suitably sized piece cut off a roll of old fashioned plaster.

I have steri strips that we bought for the kids but can’t say the packet has ever been opened.
