I've tried the chokes out, the only difference that they appear to have made is that it takes much longer for the data signal to disappear (by playing BBC Radio iPlayer) that before.

There's something weird about my build.

Been said before!

Benn doing some bits and pieces.

Shelving unit using leftover flooring and sheathing hanging on French cleats.

I've made two more, half the width of that one. That was heavy to shift, so half the size is much easier. But once you've seen one, you've seen them all.

I've acquired a few squares over the years, so using leftover flooring and a French cleat, I've got them off the bench.

I've also started trying to de-rust my Japanese chisels. These were a retirement present from the Police nearly 20 years ago. They had to go into storage when I divorced with the rest of my old workshop. That storage was damp!!

Your chisels should be fine provided you can grind/polish out every bit of pitting on the backside as the marks approach the cutting edge.

I've used those rhubarb and custard ones for years, they're good chisels - Same as those blue handled marples. What sort of things will you be making in your workshop ?

Thanks, Bob. They were stored in a canvas chisel roll so I think the canvas absorbed a lot of the damp. All the blue ones were ok at the sharp end, but the rhubarb and custard ones are rough down that end. The Japanese chisels had little plastic sleeves over their sharp ends.

I had a mate who'd had a 2" one since he was an apprentice. I last saw him with it 25 years ago and it was down just over 2" long then!

I hope to be making trinket boxes, but Mission Control has just commissioned me to frame some pictures. So everything stops for that! :D

I've still got Phase 2 to start yet, the roof and deck extending out from the doors.

I use to work with some old joiners who had ones shorter than that ! The handles were almost a different shape from how their hand/grip had worn them to a smoother shape. What sort of woods might you be using ? Did you work at Middlemoor ?

No. I joined Thames Valley in 1970 and served 30 years. Most of my service was around South Bucks and East Berks.

Ah, I see. I've got quite a bit of straight grained oak, sapele, iroko dogends that might be alright for you to hone your box making skills ? Probably most hasn't got any fancy grain but it might be alright to test the sharpness of your chisels worst case scenario you could burn it

That sounds great! I've got some odds and ends I collected years ago. They're right at the back of my damp garage and I haven't had a chance to look at them yet.

I did manage to purloin some old white oak library shelves from the old Buckinghamshire Library before it got its upgrade. They were perfectly straight and dry. Goodness only knows what they're like now!

Malc, I feel like I should be honest with you. I've got arrested once ( around 12 13 years ago) and that was for setting a fire alarm off down Exmouth in a pub. I shouldnt have done it and the guys in the car (and the morning after ) took on board it was out of character and wasn't that serious. I told them how they'd like my dad and his mentality of how they should deal with criminals (duff them up in a lay by ) they really spoiled me I'll nip over the workshop tomorrow and sort out the dogends and take a pic. DW on UK workshop made me make the dog end rack. I've got a gnarly piece of oak I'd like to see you use

I've just had a rummage through and have thinned the dog end rack out a bit.
Image
Most bits are around 400- 600mm long.
Image
That's character oak at the back and tulip wood at the front.

Image
Then there's iroko on the left, sapele in the middle and euro oak on the right.
If you stacked it a bit better I don't think it'd take up too much room. It's yours if you want it Malc

No problem Malc it helps me as well cause it frees up space. Every year or so I try and have a good sort out, it's surprising how quickly it starts accumulating again.

Nice to meet you earlier Malcolm You really have built yourself a fantastic workshop ! It looks so tidy, organised and spacious Those 3 steps up to the workshop must have made carrying the table saw in a bit more interesting

You, too, Coley. Thanks for those kind comments.

Yes, the table saw fun required me building a litter out of 4x2 and calling on friends via FB for some muscle. It took four of us!
