What is it?

Can you tell I've not been keeping up with the thread?

It's like this Robert. After Malcolm found a way of keeping the workshop door from closing and how much of a nuisance that was, he has now devised a method of keeping the doors closed and is trying that out for convenience as a comparison.

Not sure I'm a lot wiser :) What the * is a 'bents' ?

Have you made 4 very short posts to later be replaced with full height ones? Seems a lot of work for a try out if that is the case.

Maybe it is just as Bob suggested

To be fair to Malc (and not keep taking the pi88)

His "floor mounted roof" will enable cutting of all the other roof parts and trial fitting at ground level rather than continual up and down steps.

Everyone one to their own eh?

I know that one cos I watch Barnwood Builders on Discovery :) A bent in yankee english I think is the cross sectional frame used to hold up a timber frame barn, or house. Not sure how that fits in with Malc's design cos I still can't quite picture it.

Bents are simply cross-sectional templates of structural members, i.e., rafters, joists, posts, pilings, etc., that repeat on parallel planes along the length of the structure.

But in my case, across the structure. The components of my individual bents are a pair of posts, a beam and two braces that comprise the long sides of my frame. You should be able to see a couple of posts and braces lying on the deck.

Although I knew my post bases were square, I needed to check the horizontal plane of the frame for squareness. It didn't take long to cut four short pieces of 4x4 and drill them and slot them. I was then able to check for squareness, test for any issues and then fettle at knee level instead of top of ladder level.

I should also be able to make up the trusses at either end and cut the rafters ready for frame raising day.

Talking of raising day, anyone prepared to lend some muscle?! :D

I haven't set a date because I've got more fiddling joints to make and the grandchildren coming and other stuff that gets in the way. But I hope and want it to be before the end of the summer, because I have to remove some of the steel panels of the main roof to fix the ridge beam and rafters down and then create the two valleys with the steel covering and cover the new roof so as to not get soaked by autumnal rain.

I have a couple of mates, one already seen on this thread, who have promised to help. But all along, I've tried to design the build to be done on my own in case mates can't make it.

As we've had good weather recently, I've been cutting he mortise and tenons for the posts, beams, ties and braces outside. But as it threw it down last night along with some thunder and lightening and as it was raining today, I thought I'd clear a space in the workshop and do the last four brace tenons on machines. I think they came out well.

After a break away visiting family, I started a dry fit of the framing; no dowels or screws yet, just a couple of ratchet straps. The braces make it quite stable at the end away from the building, but it can move a bit at the building end. Once the ridge beam and jack rafters are connected to the main roof, and then once it's sheathed, I'm confident it won't move.

I clamped the ridge beam on to the king posts to scribe the cut line for the angle of the roof

A quick trip the the SF store to buy some heavy duty brackets and I fitted two short braces between the closer tie beam and the main plate of the building. And it does not move at all. I was swinging on the frame like a lethargic, portly, old monkey and it didn't move at all. I'm chuffed.

Aren't "bents" any repeating structure you see throughout a timber roof? They can often be made off-site for quick assembly on-site. So this part of the project assembly should be finished in double quick time or fly out the workshop in the blink of an eye.

Thank you, gents, and especially Simon for you confidence in my ability. However, you're talking of a slightly overweight 70 yo with arthritis in shoulders, hips and back and so I have to ration my heavy manual labour these days.

If the rain stops this afternoon, I shall draw bore the joints that I can, and even possibly start on the rafters.

Managed to get most of the joints dowelled between the showers.

Please don't look at the joints too closely.

Malc.....your morticer...I don't see any holddowns. If it was like my first one, that turned out to be a right PITA as the wood gripped the chisel firmly - especially with hardwood.

No, there's no hold downs on my mortiser. It's the 'hobby' model. I must have been lucky and I think the weight of the post helped. But I do take a tiny bite at a time and take my time doing it.
