Near the top if counteracting heave, near the bottom if expecting the ground to shrink. Frankly, the latter is more likely at the moment given how wet the winter has been.

Thanks Mike, as always you’re a star. Just got to work out how much I need. Am I correct in thinking that the metal needs a minimum of 50mm of concrete below and to the sides then?

Looking at the steel reinforcement mesh online at the moment. Does anyone know if the mesh needs to cover the whole of the slab area or can it be 1/2m away from the edge and still work correctly?

Thanks Rod. Think I’ve found some bigger mesh sheets that should fit nicely 3.6m x 2m should fit 4 sheets in with a little bit of jiggling about

Don’t forget to overlap the mesh sheets by about 300mm

I found that Selco offered the cheapest A142 mesh around here, but they are trade only. Fortunately my day job involves designing the fire alarm systems for Selco branches, so while chatting to the guy behind the desk he told me anyone that has any involvement with the stores can have an account, Boom. Free delivery too, bonus.

And then for the big day. I didn’t sleep properly for a couple of days thinking about concrete slabs, but....

Image
The pumping company were fantastic, talking through everything I needed to do and what he would do

Image
The truck arrived 1 hour before the concrete truck to give him plenty of time to sort out the pipes

Image
Then the concrete arrives

No pics of in progress as it was so hard work keeping up with the speed the pump was supplying concrete at, but finally

Image
Levelled off

Image
Easy float was anything but

Time for a rest after that

And up to date now

This was the work of my granddaughter, she wanted to help build the brick so I got her setting out the corners and then the first course. Image
Good job she wasn’t laying them as she said that she preferred to but the bricks together so there wasn’t a gap in between. Never mind about the mortar gap

Having watched 6 blokes and 1 mixer and 1 pump lorry lay 13 cubic meters of concrete I know how hard that would have been ;)

Looks good.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I think Mark has actually finished his workshop but he is holding back the updates because he enjoys the attention so much.
