Both gaps have been filled with expanding foam and part of it has been sliced off.

Now the left gap has been top filled with cheap exterior caulk using a scraper to flatten it.

And I found it better to do the filling after the 'primer' coats have been put on. The dark lines tell you where all the gaps are, and the satisfaction once they're filled is good.

Thanks, Malc. Why did you go for caulk as opposed to, say, filler ? And external ?

I found decorating in my house, caulk covered a multitude of issues and I found it easy to apply, smooth and paint.

And it was a trade rated cheap deal even though the internal one was cheaper. I thought that' I'd get external because there wasn't going to be any heat in the 'shop unless the sun comes out!

Mmm..I'm not sure that that will work for me as I don't have the luxury of a decent structure underneath. I've noticed that some of the joists are twisted which pulls the ceiling ply out of line, so the joints are dipped and hollowed, if you follow me. Think I will spray and the take a view.

I have one question relating to the hip roof at the end. I'm thinking of making that end a 'hot' roof as even if I put the plywood over the rafters, there is then no airflow. So I'm proposing to fill space between the rafters with my foam insulation and copious expanding foam to make it airtight.

So Flickr has sorted its' upload problems...

Tackled the slanty bits and remembered that I had one of these lurking.. Veritas IIRC...let's you measure inside, outside and all sorts of measurements...

Image

I got a few of them up...decided to do them 'two bay' at a time as much easier to handle..

Image

but need to press on as I think the days of the gazebo are numbered...it's not done that bad TBH and resisted the 50mph gusts we had over the weekend

Image

Trouble was the wind kept changing direction each day. Note the strategically placed pallets.

And in passing I noticed the bottoms of some of the door posts

Image

Actually not a problem :D as they are non-structural. The whole of the face containing two blue up'n'overs and a side entry is under a humungous steel that spans the lot. 9m or so

So we were motoring until....

well, you'll need to head on over to the main thread.

'Hot' hip roof

Postby RogerS » 01 Apr 2018, 12:43

At the end of the garage/workshop is a hip roof. There are no through ventilation routes if the roof is boarded over the rafters.

So doing some Googling I've come across the concept of a 'hot' roof. So I'm thinking that if I fill the cavity up completely between the rafters with foil-backed kingspan (or similar) and foam and then board over the top that that will be OK.

I can't see any other solution. Taking the tiles off and putting on a breathable roofing membrane is not an option.

I think you must find a way to ventilate it.
AFAIK a warm roof normally has a membrane and cross battening.

I can't see a way other than drill some large holes in some of the rafters.

A large part of the ceiling has been done and so as this area is (relatively) clear thought I'd make a start on the wall. I thought I'd be clever and buy some concrete screws that were self-tapping but they failed miserably and so it's back to the usual plastic plugs.

The door will eventually be blocked up and the RH stud position will let me span nicely with two sheets of ply to the right.

Image

Made use of the offcuts from the ceiling.

Image

Only trouble is that I had a senior moment and didn't check the verticals. When I went to offer up a board found that the uprights are not in the same plane. Job for tomorrow.

Have you calculated the snow loading on that gazebo?

Mike G did comment in passing about the hip roof in this thread.

But I'm still thinking about this 'hot' roof because as far as I can see it will be OK.

Well, if you stuck your head in a bucket of water and didn't bring it out again, then your whole life would flash in front of you, and you'd see where all the knobs and levers were when first set off. And then, if you pulled your head out again, just before you died, you could guide us home!

Can’t you just replace a few tiles or slates with roof vents?

Too many needed as you'd need one per rafter spacing and it wouldn't be in keeping with the house either.

So the plan. I can add two more ceiling joists for starters.

Image

I'd like to have done three but at the other side the central heating pipes are in the way. I wish I had some of MikeG's forward planning!

Image

And I found an excellent use for the board lifter !

Image

At the gable end, I can fit a rafter

Image

so that will vent all the spaces between the rafters bar the small triangle at either end and I can live with that.

Think it will work.

And not before time. Winds from the wrong direction.

Gosh...three weeks...it's been taking forever and some sotto voce comments from LOML reflects her thoughts about the length of time!

So here are some pretty self-explanatory photos..

The long wall

Image

The hip end

Image

I make a lot of use of clamps and temporary supports which makes popping in the intermediate joists a doddle.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The hipworked out quite well in the end and there are only a couple of small roof voids where there is no or limited air circulation and I can live with that.

Boarding was a bit of a sod as a lot of the rafters and joists were out of whack but a reasonable result in the end.

Image

And been spraying over the last couple of days. The airless sprayer I originally bought from Local Tool Sales of Blackburn has turned out to be an almighty waste of time and money. It is a piece of unmitigated Chinese CoS. Even though I religiously cleaned it, when I went to use it, it failed to prime despite all my endeavours. So I binned it and bought a Wagner which I should have done from Day One. Brilliant bit of kit.

Image

There's a big empty space there. I wonder what could be coming to fill it up ? :eusa-think:

So nearly there ..(who am I kidding ?)...but the sooner the better because the gazebo is on its last legs. It looks OK when the wind is blowing.....

Image

but when it stops ...oh dear :(

Image

Still it has served its purpose and a great idea, Will. Just really needed three more because a lot of the time inside the workshop has been wasted by having to constantly shift stuff around.
