New Window in "Workshop" (Garage)

I'm contemplating fitting a window in my 1930's brick built garage. It's type of garage with a small tiled facade above the garage door before the roof slopes gently down from about 2.7m high to just over 2m high. Originally the non-tiled section of roof was concrete asbestos but has since been replaced with felt covered OSB.

At the 2m end there is a single door in the rear wall of the garage. I would like to put a window in the adjacent single skin wall - from directly under the joist supporting the roof to about 0.8m down.

I had two thoughts... Remove all of the brickwork between the door frame and the corner brick pier down to 0.8m and build a timber frame incorporating a window aperture. Or... cut out a whole the size of the window.

As usual, welcome thoughts and input.

Thanks!

A picture paints a thousand words. Any photos?

Much better, thanks.

Cut a separate hole for the window, leaving a substantial pier between the window and the door. otherwise you'll need to put in a beefier lintel over the enlarged opening.

It's in... eBay purchase. Solid wood, handmade, double-glazed!

Now I would like to put one or two roof lights in. The roof is OSB covered in felt on a shallow incline. Can anyone recommend affordable and simple to install roof lights for this application? Thanks.

One thought on roof lights:
Build a watertight upstand on the roof possibly 150mm or so high to fit the rooflight windows used in coaches and caravans which you should be able to find at breakers or maybe fleabay.

Bob

Just checked - loads of new ones on ebay even some have upstands as part of the package.

I have Velux in the house but I bought Duratech for the workshop. Less than half the price of Velux but quality seems very good indeed. The roofer who did it was very impressed with both the window quality and the flashing kit.

Bought from https://www.jjroofingsupplies.co.uk/cat ... ?q=Dpx+m6a

No affiliation, just the best price when shopping around and quick delivery.

Install was easy, I helped. Just need to double up on the rafters for strength.

Not sure if standard centre pivot velux type windows are suitable for near horizontal use even if you can cope with the intrusion into the available head room when open?

They do top pivot too I’m sure, and flat roof which might be more suitable.

Think standard minimum pitch is 15 degrees. Also have you considered getting some panel LEDs instead. Making a hole in the roof is bound to make a weak point. All roofs leak eventually, and I would maybe reconsider the need for a velux.

You want a roof dome, rather than a velux. Roof lights are something of a weak spot for security, so think through the implications before installing.

If it's light you're after to augment daylight coming from door or window, I can throughly recommend the LED panels for both light and value for money.

Although it looks like it's dark outside, the camera has compensated for the artificial light.

They are brilliant, if you'll pardon the pun!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I do want natural daylight vs LED panels. I will have lighting but the option to not turn the lights on appeals, as does the option of having a mix of natural and artificial.

I'm not ruling out roof domes. I don't need opening, particularly as they will be in a high point of the garage.

I did come across these. Seem remarkably straightforward.

They don't have a catch or latch. I reckon it would be 10 seconds with a screwdriver to prise one of them open.

My electrician came round yesterday and thought that my LED panel in the ceiling was a light pipe type device. Not an LED.

I intend to replace my fluorescent light fittings and considering LED panels.

  • Daylight seems the obvious choice?
  • I'm estimating 2-3 panels for 5 x 2.5m garage (ceiling height 2m rising to 2.5 over the 5m length).
  • I get the impression they have a good spread of light so could be mounted along the centre line of the garage?

My 'shop is 5 x 3.5 and I have 2 each side of the apex generally in the middle of the length and mid way between the apex and top of wall. (see my 'shop build)

2 are more than adequate. All 4 make it like an operating theatre, even in daylight!

I have an issue with them disrupting the powerline data signal. If you don't have a powerline network then you won't have a problem. (See my Powerline thread)

As far as lighting goes, I love 'em!

Thank you. I was hoping I would get away with two. May I ask what wattage and/or lumen output yours are?

But please, don't buy one until we know that they are properly CE marked and not blasting out RF interference everywhere.

And don't waste your time until you've found out if you are in their delivery area.
