Anyone fancy having a go at some flame mahogany pen blanks?

Postby RogerS » 03 Sep 2015, 16:57

As the title. It can be quite brittle and with some shakes and so perhaps not for the faint hearted. I have some odd chunks of offcuts that can be ripped down to make pen blanks.

All I ask in return is a good quality photo of the finished and polished article.

Thanks for the offer.

I do not want to start pen making yet but would happy to maybe make some small implement handles if the cross section is large enough. I need about 1"x1" or glue some together to reach that size.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks, chaps. Parcels going out Friday.

It will be hit and miss as to how much flame you'll find, I'm afraid. I also found that any flame benefits from the application of a mixture of red, yellow and walnut stain to make the grain really zing but no worries if you don't have any.

Cheers

Roger

Thanks for letting me know.

If anyone ends up with a bit spare that they could turn a cylinder for me then I'd be very grateful as I can also play around with staining.

Arrived here today Roger. Many thanks. Helluva postage though, I'll have to sort out something for that later.

Will try and get something done before year end.

Andy, don't worry about the postage...I'm sure we'll' reciprocate at some time or another. Pretty impressive delivery time.

Father Christmas came early. DaveL kindly posted me the pen that he made from the mahogany and he's already posted a photo of it in another thread but it's worth reposting here.

But there were a couple of other goodies.

That is a great looking pencil. Ideal for the workshop I would say.

They do look nice but must have been very fiddly to turn on the lathe. If I knew anybody that wore them I would have a go at making some.

I have forgotten Derek. I have been practising a few candlestick shapes but I must finish knotting some bar tools, for Xmas, before I start in earnest.

Well here are my efforts. I decided to keep them chunky for two reasons:-
1) The flame effect might be more visible
2) If the recipient don't like them then they can chopped up and used elsewhere

I bit of fun I hope.

Really pleased with the finish on the bottle stopper (friction polish with carnuba wax) Wish I had done the same on the other two items (only waxed) . Maybe Roger can take a better picture. They are on their way!

Those look super, Andy. The corkscrew looks an excellent colour.

Mark..I made the mistake of 'popping in' to Worcester to my local Indian shop. 1kg dried chillis for £1.15. A quick in and out, I thought. Forgetting rush hour traffic! So I needed a reward for my efforts!! Interesting chat with the landlord who, it turns out, was the Area Manager for LIberon about ten years ago !!
