Spoked Wheel Jig

Postby Dalboy » 17 Oct 2015, 20:32

I make toys as well as spending my time turning. One of the things that I need are spoked wheels of different sizes some of which I can do on the lathe. Well this jig makes setting up to drill holes in the centre hub a lot easier and less time consuming.

The end result with a rubbish piece of wood still a happy result this took less than 5 minutes from cutting the blank to all the holes drilled

Well the first set of spoked wheels have come off the jib all the centres are nicely in the centre but does not show in the picture. The wife liked the 8 spoked version so made them.

The first one was a 12 spoke wheel with the parts

This shows the back of the wheel

Now that is really a neat idea. :D :text-goodpost: :text-coolphotos: :text-+1:

Derek, what did you make the metal indexing wheel from? And how did you space the holes?

Cheers

The disc is cut from a piece of 1/8" thick steel plate and marked out (Take your time here) before drilling, I drilled the centre hole first then placed it on a pin under the drill press then drilled all of the holes. To get it round I used the centre hole again and rotated it against the grinding wheel making sure not to overheat it. It takes a bit of time but worth it in the end. The indexing pin is made from brass and threaded rod and is spring loaded with a little turned handle on the back.

This is the originator of the jig HERE hope you can see it as you may need to sign up
