Dropbox images in forum posts

Here we go

Image

Well that seems to work

So here is how to do it

My dropbox looks like this
Image

When I select the image it opens up like this
Image

When I click on the Share Link to Photo icon in the bottom left of the window another window opens with the url of the image in the address bar like this
Image

The URL is then copied and inserted in between the Img tags in a forum post like this
Image

Now comes the manual bit the following needs to be added at the end of the url ?dl=1
Like this
[img]https://www.dropbox.com/s/bw6bo5c07reae8p/Screen%20shot%202014-08-10%20at%2022.30.43.png?dl=1[/img ]

If any of that is not clear please let me know.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

No problem Peter.
Manually adjusting the address is a bit of a faff, I know. Mark will look into if/how this can be simplified.

Andy, DROPBOX?

Is it something like Photobucket etc.? An image storage site?

Hi Phil

Dropbox is a hosting site where you can upload files into the cloud and pick them up wherever you have internet access. Can be any kind of files, photo's included.

We use Drop Box a for most of our storage needs, we can set it so students can see and share photo's and files and see our reference materials. It also means the guys in the tool shop or web developers can share our information with each other.
When we are on holiday or away from the office we can still access any files or information we require, so for us it works very well.
I am not a techie, much more at home behind the bench, I will see if I can upload a couple of pics and see how I get on.
I may be gone for some time :eusa-think:

When I hear about this "cloud" thing I think about a person who lives on CC9 (Cloud cuckoo nine)

Still prefer my hard drive and something a bit more tangible like Photobucket, which probably also resides on a cloud somewhere!

"Cloud" is just a trendy term for storage somewhere else connected via the web.

Works well enough if you trust the provide of said storage and you have good (lost cost) bandwidth every time you want to access content. TBH probably better backed up than most home systems but no doubt there is a get out clause even for paid for cloud storage if they lose your stuff so you end up needing to keep a copy of anything of importance to you.

The term originates, I think, from network design diagrams that we techies draw in Visio.

When you represent a network you draw the individual components but if you are then depicting a network in between, such as 'The Internet' then you would draw a cloud because you didn't really know where the data went, just where you sent it from and where it popped out the other end. :)

A test image using Drop Box, it took rather longer than I had hoped.
I forgot to mention I am using a Mac so all the windows are different. But thanks to Andyp I managed to work it out.

So this is how I did it.

Go into Drop Box and select a photo
ctrl and click on photo , this brings up a menu box
Select share dropbox link
In the top right hand of screen a box appears sharing image .......jpg
click on the box and a new window opens up copy and paste the ulr into your post and add the magic ?dl=1 and it pops up in your WH2 message box that you are writing in.
hit the preview and the picture should appear!

If any one is a Mac user and has a better way or can explain it/show it in a clearer format please do.

Thanks for your help guys Peter

Hi Peter
I am also a Mac user. I hope I'm not guilty of teaching you to suck eggs.
Sometimes there is a size of picture limit that the site will accept.
A way around this is to Preview your picture select edit then click in the custom box whatever size you select will reduce the pixels and the bit size. Oh don't forget to do this on a duplicate to save your original.
Kind regards
Richard

Spot on, Richard, for mentioning Preview.

Preview has some really useful features such as annotation, grabbing a selection of the screen etc that many people aren't aware of.

Size should not matter here Richard as we should have a resizer built in to the forum code to process image tag linked photos to an acceptable size.
I don't know how well tested it is so maybe if you have a 'mega picture' you could try loading it as a test.
If you use a separate topic in the woodmanglers arms say, we can 'clean up' easily afterwards.
It is always useful to know if 'automatic' things are working properly

Exactly why I thought an external test might be an idea

Have you had a change to look at a 'Dropbox' button by any chance :?:

That's good to know. I always resize my pictures before putting them in Photobucket, but in case I miss one or am using something from another site that will avoid issues.

Dropbox is looking VERY promising and so many thanks, Andy.

It means I can take photos in the workshop using my smartphone and they automatically get uploaded to Dropbox ready for me to add them into any threads when I get to my desktop later.

Just need to make sure the default access level on Dropbox for these photos is public...need to investigate that.

Mmmmm....all my photos are coming out rotated by 90 degrees

Image

They are the right way up in dropbox but here they are not. It seems to be forum software related because if I right click on the image and ask it to display in a new window it is the right way up.

Dropbox also seems a bit slow to display compared with Flickr.

I've had that sort of problem when I have uploaded to photobucket, then edited my photos to turn them the right way round, but when posted in the forum they are back the wrong way round.

The cause is a local cache made of the photo on my pc. Everyone else sees then the right way round.

Might be a similar problem??

I see your photo when it eventually loads!!!! as the piece of ash going top to bottom.

No, not that, I'm afraid. The forum software rotates them for me. Do they appear rotated to you, Bob? The wood should be vertical.

Yes it is vertical but very very slow (minutes!) to load
