Cutting Brass sheet

Postby DaveL » 05 Feb 2016, 15:49

As some of you will know, I am a clog wearer. The front of my clogs have a "toe tin" which protects the wood and the leather from being abraded, particularly if I kneel down, searching for things I have dropped in the the space time warp called a workshop floor.
This is a clog, named after me that is my first choice of footwear, see my clog maker here.
Image
While they are called a tin they are made of sheet brass, about 0.5mm thick. They are in short supply as the wearing of clogs is not what it use to be, so I thought I might have a go at producing a few. I figured that it would be a nice job for a small CNC machine and a quick look on eBay found this:

Image
Here is the listing, it does not list metal as a material it can machine, but I cannot think of reason why it should not work, can any of you?
I thought once I had the machine it could also be used to machine wood, adding names or inlays on boxes, but the first use would be cutting toe tins.
Regards,
Dave

The only way I could see it working is if you glue the brass to some wood before attempting to cut it. problem comes at the end of the cut when there is nothing to hold the workpiece - it will probably fly away and/or be gouged by the tool and bent.

I do like the toy you have found though so do get one and show us what it can do :)

edit. just looked on youtube and there are a few reviews plus lots of comments on quality that seem a bit mixed. might still be worth it for entertainment value..

For the pieces you want I'd just cut them out with some decent tin snips, dress it flat with a hammer then form the curve and finally polish it with a mop on a bench polisher/grinder.

Cutting Brass sheet

Postby Rod » 05 Feb 2016, 18:42

It says it can cut metals with a spiral bit.
I normally use my Hegner to cut brass but that machine looks more fun?

Dave,

I don't think a 200w spindle would be man enough to cut brass, I would suggest trying to find someone that has a waterjet.

I'd have spelt it Moniker as in what's your name....

had to check 'spelled' or 'spelt' though - seems either is right.

Well to get back to the brass sheet, I have now a nice new square of 24swg, it was delivered today. I had not thought about cutting it with the scroll saw, what blade would you use?

I have decided not to buy the cnc that I linked to in the first post, but I am thinking about one with a water cooled 800 watt spindle, it's a bit more expensive but it looks much more useful.

Welcome to the forum Monica.

Dave,

Monica says thank you for the welcome

That sounds better, but you must be aware that spindle bearings are not designed for drilling even in
wood base materials , for that reason I machine with a spindle (4hp) and have a drill head for holes.
You can ramp spiral drill the holes, but the size of holes on the brass you have would be slow with the
size of cutter you would use.

Dave I use metal cutting blades
I have a set of various types from Hegner which include metal cutting ones but I also bought a batch from Mike in the USA (Flying Dutchman ones).
He used to sell different types for different metals.

Workshop Heaven sell Pegasus ones:

I didn't hence the lower case m. Moniker is the correct spelling, I was trying to be funny.

Terrible when you have to explain humour isn't it?

Many google references would have you believe that the original of the slang for name is linked to Monica James, the Australian author but just because the interweb says so, don't make it correct.

I feel the both one the grounds of her being too young and the plural nature of her name James whereas it should stricly be "Jame" to rhyme with "name" if indeed the origin is from rhyming slang.

Digging a bit deeper suggests it has been in use as slang for a name (or perhaps signature) since the mid 19th Century and might originate from tramps slang but there my sources dry up.

The expression I'm used to is "Put your monika on that" being a request for a signature rather than simply a reference to a name. In this context Monika could be thought of as a corruption of Monarch or someone in authority who could provide an authorising signature or seal on a document.

Not so far. I do try not to clog anyone but do recall a student complaining I was stood on his foot.
