That is a very neat little table.

I like both the above tables. I did wonder how you would assemble the coffee table given how it appears to slot together. The round one is good too apart from the folding leg position when closed. Not sure what the fix would be for blending that in more.

Are these drawing exercises / records of things you like or do you make some of these models afterwards?

Thank you gentlemen.

I'm not sure how that coffee table would have been assembled. I drew it based on some photographs. I would change the slots on the rails so that both would be in the same orientation on each. That would make it easier to assemble.

The hinged leg is an odd detail although it's a common thing on gate leg tables. I think the usual application would be for a drop leaf arrangement. When the leg is folded back, the leaf would cover most of it.

I generally draw these models as exercises but also as records of pieces I at least find interesting. Often it is just for some detail on the piece but I draw the whole thing. Maybe one day some of them will move up my list of projects to build.

I do like this style. Possibly look even better without the centre panel, but might be quite weak then...

MArk, I thought about leaving the panel out because I liked it better, too. I thought about the strength issue and decided to put it in. It was there in the original anyway.

Looks like interest has waned rather dramatically but here's one more.

ImageThis Shaker-style bench was featured in Fine Woodworkings last tools and Shops issue. I drew it for the plans.

I like bench very much. Perhaps nearer a piece of furniture than a workshop item!

Is the image from the previous post available as I cannot see it?

Thanks Ian. I wish I could take credit for it.

I don't know why the image in the previous one didn't show. I edited that post and redid the link. Does it show now?

Yes with a little bit of work that would be a good sideboard, I like it but the coffee table didn't do anything for me.

Mmmm, yes a sideboard, hand cut a quick set of dovetails while the TV is on! Reminds me of the NT house near Oxford that was the home of Lord Nuffield, fully kitted out workshop in his bedroom wardrobe.....just in case he woke up in the night with an idea on how to fix or make something.

I don't think it has. Problem is I (we?) can't keep replying with the same comments so I don't reply.

You are posting some interesting pieces and as always impressive drawing and presentation skills. I'm regularly looking as are others if you look at the view count instead of number of replies. Assuming you are drawing these items for yourself rather than just for us, please keep them coming. Some of your subjects are not to my taste in terms of things I'd like to make but they often have interesting design features and set me thinking how they could be made.

The coffee table would look good with frame only, no panel.

Dave R, are these destined for plans/builds?
If so I was interested in your workflow and how after making a scheme you then make it into a workable design?

Some of these, such as the Shaker-inspired workbench are pieces that were build and for which I drew plans. The sideboard I just posted is going to get built by one of my clients. I'll flesh out the piece with all the parts and joinery and then create the plans for the furniture maker to follow. With the external parts all drawn, it's a fairly simple matter of figuring out the internal structure required. I guess I've studied and drawn enough detailed furniture pieces that I can figure out what needs to be done to make the piece work. Doing this in SketchUp makes it easier because I can see the parts in 3D and I can figure out how they will work together.

The plans will be made in LayOut using the SketchUp model. This makes for a very streamlined process because the model (and not just images from the model) is linked directly to the document. I changes are needed, I can make them and then update the plans automatically.

Is LayOut a separate add-on to sketchup?

I've had this idea to try simulating an old style plan using SketchUp and LayOut. This morning I had some time to play and came up with this. This is based on a plan in a book from the early 1920s and it's typical of the sort of plans woodworkers might work from if they were using plans at all. These days I would expect most woodworkers who work from plans would find this too spare. They'd want much more detail than is provided in this plan.

I like the way that looks Dave, not the actual plan but the style and layout looks very good.

Thanks Mark. You say you don't like the plan. Does that mean the piece of furniture doesn't appeal or you don't like how the project is presented?

I like both the plan and the actual table.
There's everything you need, to make it, very clearly and succinctly laid out, leaving the rest to the skills of the woodworker.
