iPhone speaker stand

The place to find and post anything related to the world of spinning wood at ridiculously high speeds!

iPhone speaker stand

Postby Doug » 23 Oct 2016, 10:11

I've seen a few wooden iPhone speaker stands on Instagram & wondered how well they worked so as the rain woke me early this morning meaning I couldn't go down the allotment I thought I'd go have a play.

I've got a few 6x2 1/2" offcut blocks of walnut varying in length so I cut one to fit the biggest lathe chuck I have & turned a cone in the centre.

Image

The slot for the iPhone was cut with the domino XL with 8mm bit using an angled cut going 15mm in at first & then deepening the cut in the centre into the top of the cone to let the sound through.

Image

I'm really surprised how it increases the sound when you put he phone in, I'm guessing it's because it's directing the sound.

Mass production next Doug. Great little exercise and a working item at the end. Just want to know if the ear piece/speaker is at the top of the phone is it a case of the sound transmitted through the phone to the bottom

I have seen these before, but not as good looking as Doug's.

I believe they only work with a smartphone that has the speaker(s) at the bottom.

Some of the new phones have stereophonic speakers - twin horns?

Clever Doug.
I wonder how much the sound would change if different woods are used.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

The first order effect is going to be the shape of the horn as well as the smallest and largest diameter relative to the wavelength of the sounds to be boosted ( note velocity of sound in air is 330 m/s).
Second order effects such as resonances will depend on the density of the so and the total mass.
In an ideal world the slot for the phone should be an air tight fit.
Difficult to optimise without a lot of acoustic measurement gear and hard sums.

:D ..
I started typing about acoustic coupling , Loudspeaker impedance matching, Horns etc .. then I stopped and deleted it ..

I have no idea were the speaker is on an Iphone .. and also, from a quick look at the wip .. didn't see a sound port from phone to amplifier .. so is it just a vibration amplifier ?

This is a good read. Lowther were one of the pioneers of horn loudspeakers and the stand is a primtive variant.

My iPhone's speaker is on the bottom so it works a treat, I have seen double coned speaker stands so presume you can get phones with two speakers.
Definitely not interested in mass production though I have had a few requests in the last 10 hours, as long as I can get the cricket commentary through it down the allotment I'll be a happy bunny.

Though by the time the sun came out the cricket was over, still I managed to get my winter onions in this afternoon
