Veneering, Marquetry and Wood Carving (Ornamentation)

Postby meccarroll » 18 Dec 2016, 11:50

Hi all,

ORNAMENTATION IN WOOD

looking at the forum I wonder if there is any interest for a specialised section on Veneering, Marquetry and wood Carving.

Seems we have a good selection already covering general subjects that most of us tend to do but what about when you want to take your masterpiece and say veneer it etc where do you look for past examples?

These are more specialised subjects which don't necessarily come into the general array of woodworking. It's a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack when you want to know how to do something on these subjects.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Is it worth looking into?

I think this could be a good idea Mark. Obviously up to the mod chaps.

Some of my past projects have included veneer work and carving, but these may have been during the 1st reign of Woodhaven.

I'm not sure on the most appropriate title for the new section - 'ornamental' will perhaps cover too much of a wide range of woodworking skills which might still be a problem if someone wanted to focus on just 'veneer work' for example.

But it's certainly a thumbs up from me.

I remember a while back you made a table which had carved leg tops (first class piece), it was very interesting but it would be a devil to find. Same with veneering if someone has a veneered piece it might not show in a search. It is of course up to the mods to consider if they think it's worthwhile or feasible though.

Thank you for showing some interest Mr Pinch.

We will see what others have to say about this but personally I think that opening a new board for such things would not help. Projects and WIP with a thread title that accurate describes what is being made is better idea.
The thread title (subject) can be changed ( as Mike G does with each update to his house renovation thread ) which would help searching and finding stuff.

Surely a table build is first and foremost a project and requires a WIP. Each thread update can have a separate subject that covers the more specific elements as the project progresses.

I know searching for stuff can sometimes be a problem and a lot of excellent stuff was lost when the original Woodhaven folded if anyone is having trouble finding a post just ask and between us all I expect we can find most things.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Ah no worries chap, although it's a shame that thread was lost, but hey-ho, it's almost Christmas :D

I think Andy has a good point there.

Yes, that's probably the way to go. I guess if there was a lot of veneer work or carving, then a new board would be justifiable. The only negative I see with changing the title is that particular element of the project will soon pass and onto the next element. But having said that, if a posh desk was in the throws of being made for example, all the elements will possibly be in there somewhere.

It's not too important Andy, it was just a thought rattling around in my head. I thought it might help organise the woodworking side a bit more like putting things in a filing cabinet. Could probabily do with a building section though :?

Mr Pinch, I think I might be heading to the naughty corner again, do you care to join  :(

Mark is away visiting Father Christmas at the moment. I am sure when he gets back the shed/workshop build board will be high on his to do list :D

No harm in sharing thoughts and ideas BTW.

My own feeling is that new forums should be created once an existing forum has a significant proportion of posts on a more specific subject.
A current example would be on the projects and WIP Forum where we have lots of workshop build threads and we are proposing to have a new workshop build forum to house them.

You may be right Bob and it is much the same on other forums. In the profession, woodwork is generally broken into areas related to what you do but, of course, this is a forum and the needs are different.

I used to work in a boatyard many years ago and the woodwork trades were broken into sections:

1. Wood machinist
2. Setter outer,
3. Boat Joiner
4. Boat Fitter
5. Shipwright
6. Veneerer
7. Woodturner
8. Polisher

Just another bit of useless information Bob :D :?

Mr Pinch I found that table with carved leg: http://www.woodworkuk.co.uk/forum/viewt ... =9&t=10424

It is one of the best pieces of cabinet work I have ever seen and you took the time to illustrate every detail. I'd love to Pinch some of your ideas if I may (Pinch........you get it )...............
...........It's christmas Mr Pinch you have to allow me a bit of leeway :obscene-drinkingcheers:

Hey Mark, glad to see you've returned from the good old naughty corner!

And ole chap... wonderful to see you found the old 'Maple Office Suite' thread from t'other forum. I wish I had commissions like that more often, but these are very rare unfortunately. Tis only when I'm really content in my work, I mean, really happy content and excited with all that magical dust in the air. I think I was born in the wrong era. Maybe I was a cabinet maker 250 years ago in a previous life and some of the energy is still within me spiritually, or maybe I'm just nuts.

haha .. just how I feel !
I love woodwork, but hate making what most customers want these days :|

I just want to make really nice over the top better than anyone else designs .. but as you say .. not enough customers for that.
