Looks like some SA Pine with those wide growth rings.

I thought it was stained and I agree with a pine of some sort. But I guess that would be too easy.

Looking through my old samples, it looks like 'kingwood' or 'tulipwood'? 8-)
In my previous life, I was a tree.

My - that's a throw back - my Father used to grain all our woodwork back in the day.
He covered all the panelled doors with hardboard then grained them. Used feathers too.
I think Barry Bucknell started the trend?

I guess it must be 40 yrs ago when my Grandad used to grain everything !
So I've always had it in my mind to have a go.

Barry Bucknell!! That's a blast from the past! He's got a lot to answer for!

I used to work in a little retail timber yard in the 60s; no power, the only lighting was from Tilly lamps.

Anyway, BB had persuaded many people to panel their doors with hardboard, and they'd come in with their door sizes. We'd have stock sizes, 6'6" x 2'6", 6'8" x2'8", 6' x 2', etc, and they'd want the panel cut to size, meaning I'd have to sometimes take off just a few mms off that stock size. No power; all by hand.

Some people even came in with all four dimensions of the face of the door!

The only saving grace was the hardboard was Royalboard. I seem to recall it was the best available but can't find it these days. I used to unload 20 tons by hand every Monday morning, which, BTW, was not just for BB converts; the company supplied wholesale to DIY shops all over London.

The best thing about BB's "modernisation" was that it was generally reversible - pull off the hardboard and the "protected" panelled door was revealed.

this was years ago, and I had literaly just finished building my CNC .. and was looking to try all sorts on it.
but it can easily go wrong, so I used MDF rather than proper wood, but still wanted an idea of what it would look like.
