Malc, Because of the way Apple do things if you are using one of their devices make sure the volume buttoms are facing the ground when you take a picture. Failing that you will have to load the images into Photos and make sure they are orientated correctly and then make sure you select the re-orientated version for the uploading.

Malc, just had a play on my iPad whcih is what I think you are using. I cannot get a portrait image to display correctly either, turning round in Photos on the iPad has no effect. I think the only thing you can do is as per my first sentance. Take the photo with volume buttons facing down.

2nd edit.
Malc try this.
Assuming your original image is in photos and is in portrait. Turn it so it is sidways ie portrait. Save. Then turn it back to portrait, save. Then upload. It worked for me on a test.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

Andy,

I tired your way and they still ended up on their side in preview.

I took the images on an iPhone 5S, portrait with the volume buttons to the left top. All previous images I had taken as landscape with the volume button at the bottom left.

That was the first time I had used portrait for image effect! Ha!

So, I tried cropping to resize it. The dimensions changed but the image file sizes didn't change.

Andy and other Apple users : -

Open Preview

Open the image.

Go to Tools.

Resize the image (It's huge to start with!!)

I think that might work.

Good work Malcolm. I resolved my corners by doing 3x3 screwed onto battens and battens screwed to shed corners. In 90% of cases the overlap was fine. That worked fine with 25mm depth battens and 19mm boards

The standard technique is a 95x45 screwed such that it projects 45mm . However, I have always thought this looks extremely heavy and clumsy, and it may cover your studs in such a way as you can't get a batten in alongside. That is why I developed the slightly more complex arrangement I use on my sheds.

What is the problem here that you are trying to overcome?

Thanks, Mike.

I agree with the heavyweight look of an ex 4x2 in the corner.

I suppose I'm being tight and trying to get away without buying another size (75x25) or ripping down some 95x45.

I was trying to get it completed with the supplied 50x25. The possible problem I can foresee is that the fixing screws will be visible and that some modification will be needed at the bottom where the bottom FE board will kick out slightly.

I just let the bottom couple of boards overhang the edging more than the others.

What you have drawn would work if F/E, when nailed in place, added up to 25mm thickness, but it doesn't. You'll find the thickness around 30 to 32mm. Further, your corner detail would need a batten directly behind it as the side that is fixed to the frame is only "on" by 25mm, thus making the corner rather flexible.

Mike, you're absolutely right. I put together a model of short lengths of 50x 25 and yes, it was very wobbly on the corner. So, I'll make it with 75x25 so it has more to bear against the frame, but I won't make it up until the FE has arrived and I can measure it.

Finished counter battening the walls today. That just leaves the corners, and door and window apertures to build after the FE arrives.

I closed down and tidied the site today. We are hosting our French Twinning guests from Calvados Council this weekend. Back on site Monday or Tuesday.

A bientôt!

I got given a bit of free time tonight after a whirlwind tidy of the house and modelled what I think I wanted for the corner detail to support the Feather Edge and look pleasing at the same time.

I worked it out that I can rip it out of left over 95x45 to the same 25mm thickness of the counter battens, but leave the final widths till after the FE arrives and model it on site.

They're tightly loose, or loosely tight, whichever way you look at it. I'll try and get the adjacent sheets cut and then screw them all in so that I get some tight joins.

Having no end of trouble trying to source local cladding. Nearest sawmill can't do it. The next two, equidistant, one in Somerset and one in East Devon, are determined to confuse me!!! One prices it per cubic metre, one prices it per square metre, and the first one priced it per cubic foot!!!

The little hair I had left has been pulled out! :eusa-doh:

Malc, do you think it might be easier to paint those ceiling boards before you put them up?

It hadn't occurred to me. But, I've manhandled that last one up and down about 3 times, I'd end up looking like Banquo's ghost!

I was looking forward to dressing up and spraying the lot with the Wagner. (Aldi BW Matt emulsion £6.99 for 7.5L watered down). In any case there will be some gap filling to do.

you could always wait for the paint to dry. :)

Spraying does sound sounds like fun though.

Vastern in Wiltshire is very good. Might be a bit far from you but they seemed very helpful to me.

Thanks, Tim, but I've decided to go for the one doing it by the square metre. They're happy for me to call in the mill and see the operation. Going Friday.

The other was not anywhere near as helpful.

Ordered the cladding today. Went to the sawmills and saw, pardon the pun, the log that some of my cladding is coming from!

IMG_1368.JPG

The logs are bought from the Longleat estate. Apparently, the estate used to have foresters who would clean off the lower limb twigs when they were young so the trunk was relatively knotless for the first 30ft or so.

This log is sitting on the big bandsaw track.

This is the little track that will cut the angle for the feather edge.

That cladding is going to look really lovely! Do you put it up green or let it dry a bit for shrinkage?

It's actually going up green - Bedec Barn Paint French Grey - which is pale greenish!

This larch comes out the same price as Douglas Fir.
