Display Case / Drinks Cabinet (Complete)

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Display Case / Drinks Cabinet (Complete)

Hello chaps n chap'esses!

Hope you are all well, been a bit quiet of late... Though delighted to share two brand new commissions, both wood related. One starting in 2-3 weeks... the other April 2018, both likely to make a mess of me!

Jim

After a bit of a slow start, we're rolling.... Prepping the veneers, the grey birds eye maple is gorgeous. Ripple Sycamore bonded onto Canadian maple and Oak blanks machined up ready for *cough* CNC'ing the legs... (Poplar length for trialling)

More soon...

Jim

A sort of calm before the storm Mike, getting all the parts in, final tweaks and cad/cam sorted for the legs, hopefully this approach doesn't disappoint the traditionalists.

I'm now plowing through veneering, prepared 22mm maple for the frame work, and some panels to form torsion boxes for the top and bottom of the cabinet.

I took some pictures of the panels being veneered today, using ( or most of) a method I was shown by Robert Ingham... I think Rob S knows Robert (?). Robert is an excellent maker who taught at the Makepeace Parnham School of furniture. I think this method is also shown in Robert's book.

I've shoot my veneers in a bundle with the tracksaw, it's rapid, here you can see some 2mm walnut (bit posh) backing up the cut on the top. 2nd pic pre cut.

ImageImage

I tape the leaves together stretching the tape, then running a length along Image

Flip the whole sheet and glue the joints by hanging them over the edge of the bench

Image

Laying flat, the joints now butt jointed coopered (?) I wipe off the excess and add a couple of temp tapes to hold in place until the glue has grabbed (1hr) then I remove the temp tape from the glue face and bond it to the substrate.

This method is great for a tight joint and more importantly minimises the chance of the dreaded veneer creep.... Further still if you use a UF glue.

More tomorrow...

Jim

Robert Ingham makes some very nice pieces.
I’ve spoken to him a few times at “Art in Action” at Waterperry (sadly no longer held).
A few years ago I nearly bought one of his boxes but shied away from the price (£160) - perhaps a mistake?
I have his book though

Hi Jim,

I'm just about to embark of some veneering using thick (2mm ish) veneers kindly cut and sanded for me by Woodbloke (thanks Rob!) and have been taking tips from Rob who has passed on precisely the same taping method as you are using.
He has some High tack/super strong/stretchy tape that is just a bit more yellow than traditional masking tape but he bought it surplus and the store (InExcess) has run out.

What is the tape you are using please? I've seen our 'merkin cousins using some sort of blue tape for general workshop tasks but not seen it for sale here other than the catering trade first aid strips which I think is something else entirely.

Any pointers please?

TIA
Bob

I’ve got some cheap blue tape, which I’m sure I bought from Toolstation or Screwfix - don’t know if it’s the same stuff though.

Thanks Rod
The tape Rob has is incredibly stretchy. Almost a cross between fabric elastoplast and "normal" masking tape.
I'd estimate it has 5-10% stretch!
