wadkin RS

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

I'm not going to make everything all shiny, some bits are getting black oxided.

Image

But theres still plenty to make shiny, this is the handle for the cross slide

Image

Sanded to 400 grit

Image

Then buffed with silverline red compound

Image

The buffalo horn handle cleaned up pretty well, I just sanded it then used some T-cut

Image

The handwheel for the carraige went on the lathe to get sanded and buffed

Thanks Steve, I've been having a bit withdrawl from restos. I've accumulated loads of browny points from the wife because I built a new kitchen and on new years day I started decorating the living room.

This big bolt is used as an adjustable stop for the pivoting motor mount, it was quite pitted

Image

I cleaned it up on the disc sander and then glued various grits onto a board and went down to 400 before polishing

Image

Image

Image

More blackened bits

Image

I was surprised the tailstock was not seized

Image

Image

There must of been a casting cock up because this bit has been filled

Thanks Roger
I made a bit more shiny

Image

I think the carriage is a later addition to this lathe because of the aluminium handwheel, the tailstock has and iron handwheel which takes a lot of effort to get then looking good. I just so happened to have a spare aluminium hand wheel but it will need some work to make it fit

Image

Image

The plan is to turn the boss of the handwheel down.

The thread views count should let you know there are a few of us regularly lapping up the updates even if not commenting regularly.

With what seems like acres of dodgy plaster wall to sort out at my daughters place and seeing little change for the effort expended it's nice to see someone else making progress on something that is actually interesting :)

Thanks Robert, I know a lot of people enjoy this old stuff and understand theres not much to comment on.
My daughter recently flew the nest and I got a call to help with something, whilst there I noticed a plug that had been wired dodgily, on inspection I found the brown wire in the blue pin and blue in the brown. Her fiancé had wired it.

this is how I used to remember. second letter of the colour = first letter of plug position.

Not heard that one before Andy. :eusa-clap:

I don't think I'll ever forget. We moved house when I was about 10 from a house with all round pin plugs to a "modern" square pin house. I was unwell as the time so as soon as I was installed in bed, Every portable appliance was brought up to me in my new bedroom to have the plugs changed. "Line on the right" was drummed in at that stage.

The lathe came with a banjo which is off a bigger RS and it was missing its handle. I just so happened to have the correct one in my stash, I just need to fix the handle

Image

It put up a bit of a fight, I had to drill two tapered pins out.

I need to make a new end for this

Thanks David, I like the shiny bits also. Its hard not to get carried away.
This is my choice of filler, I find it much better than normal car bodge. it sands really well with none of the pin holes you get with normal stuff.

Image

I've been slowly going through every casting cleaning, filling and sanding.

Image

This is my choice of primer, you need synthetic thinners but its pretty idiot proof to spray.

I'm also one of those that never say anything about this post and these photos and I don't really know what any of these machines really do, but just gaze in wonder at them. They were works of art when they were built and now Wallace is restoring them back to those artworks, but crucially, working artworks.

Thanks, Wallace.

Thanks Malc, Andy those blocks are from Wadkins Green lane works, the whole shop floor was end grain pine blocks. The place got demolished last year so I went down with a van and got me some flooring for my workshop. They are 4"thick so I cut them in half to make them go further. They were laid in bitumen and it has soaked up into the end grain so they are really smelly. After I cut them I had to throw my clothes away. So I've got about 3 thousand blocks which I think will do my whole shop.
I also bought the 7' oak doors from the main façade, god knows what they weigh, I can just about lift an end of the floor. My wadkinitis nearly got the better of me when I found myself making a deal for the greek stone pillars. Reality kicked in and I came to my senses. I would of loved the stone bit with 'wadkin wood working machinery' carved in it. That bit got kept to be placed in the housing development that is being built on the site now.

This is where all the prep work pays off, if you've tried to makes shortcuts it shows when sprayed

Great work as ever, seeing slightly tatty handles shining like they have just left the factory is very satisfying to watch. Amazing story r.e the factory floor... glad someone spotted this blocks and asked.
