The builder's are coming - floorboard laying

Afternoon Roger

Kitchen sink - inoperable wastes due to funny continental pipe fitting. Nothing I have here stands any chance of fitting. It's not 32mm or 1.25 or 40mm or any other combination.

I once got the waste connected to a temporary sink using part of a motorbike inner tube, a couple of jubilee clips, some Vaseline and sticky tape.

If all else fails, use a bucket.

Cheers

Actually I have now done it. In a fit of temper I hurled the supplied wretched 90 degree bend at the floor. The brittle plastic cracked. Just enough for me to squeeze in a 32mm pipe, still do the compression rubber join thingie up and applying Plumbers Gold inside and outside the crack.

Meanwhile half the radiators have decided to stop working. No idea why. Officially can't be * to sort them out. Fan heaters are the way to go. Some rads are hot at the top and at the bottom but not the middle. I reckon it's those * Cordivari radiators.

Looking back it does seem that a number of problems stem for using imported stuff especially the plumbing woes.

Stick to plain and simple stuff designed for the British market. and you would not have had half the problems. Form over Function and KISS come to mind!

Just had a good read of this post, very interesting saga!

There is a French store ( ps not been for a few years) bit like B and Q etc called Leroy Merlin, look for website. They have a store in Calais, by the big fort. They have lots of adapters and useful bits plus lots of the staff seem to know what they are talking about.

We used to buy lots of bits there on way back from hols for our rentals, had some good bargains including a steel chop saw at half the UK price, worth a look if you are in the area.

If anybody goes, let us know if they are still good!

Also for groundworks there is a really good site called. "The Brew Cabin" did my block drive with info rom there - loads of professional help!

Ahhhh I do love a waterfall. I installed one a few years ago and love the fact you can hear it all the time when out in the garden.

So first time for everything and in the bathroom we have a wetroom tray. I've never made envelope cuts before and TBH trying to get my head around doing them and how they would then give me the slope needed to take the water away fair did my head in. But game on...

First I did a lot of online research looking at photos of other peoples. Then I and CDA (Chief Design Authority) worked out which tiles we wanted to maintain some sort of 'flow' of the design. Aesthetics being something that Tiling Muppet hadn't got a clue about as I found out later.

Then marked up pencil lines on the tiles and took them outside to cut on my new toy

Image

It's a Scheppach water-lubricated tile cutting machine. Not a bad bit of kit. Needed some fettling but guess that's par for the course these days. Included fitting a decent Rubi blade. It's crying out for a zero-clearance insert but not sure how to do that....I can live with it as it is.

And so dry-laid them down and felt rather chuffed at the result. Can you spot the deliberate error ?

Image

Yup....laid one down the wrong way round !

Image

That's better !

The middle tile looked to be a bit of a challenge to do

Image

but actually when you calmly looked at the sequence of cuts it all dropped into place

et voila

Image

We're cooking on gas.

One final tweak to go though and that's here...

Image

I know that if I try and cut off that tiny triangle it will break so the plan is to fix the tile in place and then carefully grind a slot to take the grout. Using another rather nice dry-cutting diamond blade - again from Rubi. Cunning, huh ?

Boom, looks great. It is quite simple when you get your head round it, you should be really pleased with that :D
In our new place the boss decided on pebble mosaics in the shower tray. I didn't feel happy about doing it so get a tiler in to fit and he made an absolute mess of it. I was so fuming I pulled it all up when he left, got some advice on the tilers forum and did it myself. Used the epoxy grout as well. Next time she isn't getting a choice.

The bridge saw looks a good tool.

To cut tiles and stone in my house I bought a cheap Lidl track saw and fitted a diamond blade - used dry there's little dust when connected to a vacuum, and used wet (garden pressure sprayer) it leaves a glass smooth edge with no chips.

One thing that is making me pause for thought is the sharp edges on those envelope cuts. The tiles have a slight bevel all the way round the perimeter which, of course, disappears at the cuts. Thinking cut soles of feet perhaps. I can't round them off because these tiles are actually faux marble (unlike the ones in the en-suite) and the underlying material is terracotta.

Be just the job for your corns Roger!

I think you could just stone the edge lightly and dont rake the grout line, just sponge off across the joint and the terracotta line will hardly be visible.

That's a thought, Bob.

I've just poured in some self-levelling compound in the spaces where I've had to remove the cracked tiles because of the tiling muppet leaving so many voids underneath. And wouldn't you just know it, wiping off the spillage on a couple of adjacent tiles, reveals cracks in two of those. So they're going to have to come up as well. And I do so enjoy chiselling up hardened tile adhesive. Tempted to ring him up and give him a good old ear-bashing. But instead I will let my builder know....heh heh..he's a right old gossip .

Think on balance that I'm going to do a spare tile count and possible pull up a couple more just in case.

I just love redoing so-called professional trades work.

While waiting for yet more self-levelling compound to go off thought I'd post a few pictures on other stuff that went on last year.

Take one 200 year old wall built in Georgian times. Add lots of rain, let nature take its course and the result is ..

Image

Image

Engage the services of a master drystone waller...

Image

It was interesting to see the construction..a bit like house walls..two faces made from rather good stone and an infill section from crud. I got him to stick in a drainage pipe for future projects.

And some days later

Image

(I showed him how to use lime mortar instead of cement which some numpty had used in the past to bodge a repair.)

And a nice straight wall.

That’s a cut above a normal dry stone wall with those trimmed and shaped stones.
Many moons ago I used to help out on a farm in the Yorkshire Dales where the old farmer spent a lot of his time repairing walls damaged by sheep trying to get onto his land.
