Storage Box/Chest

Postby Rod » 07 May 2018, 19:14

With all the medical treatment I’ve been having over the last 4yrs I really haven’t done much in my workshop apart from the odd bit of DIY maintenance etc. But a few weeks ago I was dragged round a Furniture showroom ( to buy some anti slip carpet stuff) when my wife spotted an Ercol storage chest. Apart from the fact it was £322 it was also too big for space available for it.
“I’ll make you one I said, I’ve got some lovely walnut for the top which will match the chest of drawers”.

Image
So last week I dug out the wood from my shed.

Image

I’ve got 4 planks of air dried walnut that I bought years ago, 2 top quality and 2 not so good with a few knots and defects. After a bit of head scratching and a few design changes, I reckoned I could get the poorer quality walnut to work.
For the painted areas I’ve got several boards of “dirty” sycamore which should do the trick.

:text-+1: Must be great to smell the sawdust again. Are you going to fire up the lathe as well and turn some legs as per the Ercol one?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks

Andy - I might go for the easy option as I’ve some double mortices and housing to cut into them.
Actually thinking about them, I might be able to turn them after the cutting??

I've seen mortices cut first and plugged for turning as well as a jig used for morticing after turning. I think the former is probably easier.

Storage Box/Chest

Postby Rod » 17 May 2018, 00:11

Despite being a man of leisure, gardening and Grand-parenting duties keep getting in the way.

I used my WoodRat for cutting the mortices, housings and panel rebates but my router table for the panel rising - the cutter is a bit too wide for the rat.
For the mortices and housings I used a carbide spiral uncut. For the rebates and panel rising I used cutters from Wealden.

I’m leaving the tenon cutting until last ( which I do on my Bandsaw) to cater for any minor fitting discrepancies. I haven’t decided wether to trim the mortices square or leave as cut and round the tenons instead - very quick using a Japanese saw file.

To be continued

That looks like this bit of kit, which is utterly fantastic :D. Had one in my router table on the big Trend for several years - Rob

Yes that’s the one, makes changing cutters a cinch. Don’t remember paying that sort of money though!

Dave - that’ll be the day though I’ve still quite a stock of timber to get through.

I started cutting out the tenons - I carefully marked and numbered all the pieces after the dry fit then stupidly cut them off using the Bandsaw!!

Time to pack up for the day.

A bit more dry fitting

Then the adrenaline bit - the glue up!

Note to self, apart from not numbering the parts you are going to cut off, allow a bit more slack in the joints especially the raised panel items.

Well done on the chest, sir. Perhaps it is the lighting, but those panels sure look like butternut. I am prepping the same, at the mo'. Wish I could find my camera to snap a pic or two. Maybe the wife will allow me using her I-phone. :o Looking forward to the top.
