Cufflink Box

Postby Woodbloke » 08 Jun 2018, 23:39

I made this a while ago using the last fragments of my 'waterfall elm'. It's a small cufflink box to hold a half dozen pairs:

Construction is fairly conventional, being through dovetails with a large centre pin where the lid was sawn off on the bandsaw. There's also a solid 8mm top panel and the base is veneered in the same elm; no handle has been fitted but instead a small chamfer has been worked onto the front edge:

The lining was made from a small part of my stash of Bog Oak, 5300yo and was particularly irksome to make as the internal sections had to be cross-halved, then inserted from the underside into the housings in the side linings.

Hinges were from Ian Hawthorne and proved quite tricky to fit as the box sides are 12mm thick and the hinges are 8mm..not a lot of material to play with:

Finish is a couple of coats of satin Osmo PolyX with some Swedish beeswax over the top - Rob

This stuff. Incredibly expensive  but a little goes a long way. Nice to use though and SWIMBO treats me occasionally - Rob

That’s on a par with Alfie Shine - £9.50 for a tiny tin.
Got good reviews though.

That stuff is insane!...I tried to persuade Jim to let me have a tin for a trial, but stoney ground :( - Rob

You just re-posted that to get into the Old Oak club. :) :)

Still cant understand why anyone would wear cufflinks these days.

I go to a couple of black tie dinners a year and my dress shirts require them.

Agreed, but very occasionally I go 'suited n'booted' and get out one of my double cuffed shirts where a set of links looks proper. Quite often you see folk on the telly who wear a suit with shirt button cuffs which looks hideous...BoJo being a prime example. Trump, for all his faults manages to look respectable with his cufflinked shirts, despite wearing his tie about 150mm too long, but at least he knows how to do a decent Windsor knot - Rob

Beautiful box. I particularly like that you have aligned the screws all the same way.

Any time I wear a shirt that can take cufflinks, I wear cufflinks, I have lots of them.

I always roll single cuff shirts sleeves up to the elbow, regardless if I'm wearing a pully or jacket - Rob
