Walnut tree

Postby Dalboy » 04 Sep 2018, 16:10

I did an even a little while ago and a lady came up to me asking if I wanted a walnut tree which had been down for about three years. not being one to refuse wood last Tuesday I went and collected it and yesterday i completed cutting it up as I was very busy over the weekend(that is the reason for now catching up on some of the posts.
This is the first tree I was offered at this event the other I will be going to look at on Thursday and it is 12ft long yew tree trunk which if it is OK will cost a drink

The slabs are 18inch square to give an idea of size

Given the chainsaw a clean up and sharpen the two chains ready for tomorrow. That will then take me to the point of overflowing with wood. I will then have to have a sort out to see which I will throw out.

Still working on this lot. But the yew got postponed until tomorrow so out collecting that. Also to slow things down did an event the weekend and unloaded the car and blow me down if I only went and found a biggish lump of lightly spalted beech measuring 47" X 17" X 3" just could not work out how it got there.

Well been outYet more wood having a great month for collecting. I think I am becoming a wood hoarder.
I went out today and looked at the yew log I mentioned the other day which is 12foot but only came back with this pile. I can hear you all saying well what happened to the log well that one and a shorter one which is bigger in diameter was just too much for my volvo estate car so the very very kind man said he will deliver those two free of charge.
This is what I brought back 12" steel ruler for scale.

I'm jealous - yew is my alltime favourite turning wood. Very scarce around here in any decent size.

Yew often grows up as several separate stems that fuse together into one larger trunk as they get bigger, which is why you can get really interesting grain patterns.

Even after he drops the two big bits off there are still two other pieces over 15" diameter and a good 6 ft long but my storage is getting tight and he will be having some large apple later as well as some burrs of various woods. I think I have hit the jackpot and in wood heaven

It's loverly stuff but dreadful to season for cabinet work, which is why I don't use it. After a few years, it also looses it's orange colour and just turns a very mundane sort of brown. This pair of carvings in Japanese Yew:
