Happy Birthday... Maybe ?

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

Thanks Roger, yes subsequent sanding does remove the surface finish, it still gets in the Sycamore grain , a grain fill would be best prior perhaps Sanding with extraction helped the most, I've the Mirka /Abranet sanding block which you can plug into the vac. I use the Abranet on the ROS too.

PS... same finish throughout* I'm brushing the Osmo UV Wax (WB), hoping the UV blockers will delay the effects of UV for as long as possible. Some maple finished the same way 3 years ago still looks quite light .

*Except the scorched Oak which is ebonised plus extra thin oil

Front legs: black. In the OP I drew them to the edge... But now I'm not too sure...

Middle or Edge?

Not that I know much about designing furniture, but I like the leg in the middle better than on the edge.

FWIW I disagree and think the edge is better. Would like to see the whole front with both legs in situ.

Looking fabulous. I think I prefer the leg in the corner. If it was in the middle, it will only look as though it's in the middle when viewed straight on anyway. But Hey! I'm no design guru!

Oh.... 50/50.

I'm not sure the plates or soffit are going to be stiff enough and my legs are quite slender...I might need to work in an apron or rake to eliminate twist/wobble which will lead the leg position (possibily outside)...

I tried out the round legs but they were just too skinny and wobbly Image

Trialed a few alternatives...

ImageImageImageImage

Settling on ..

Image

If you can make sense of it upside down!... Along with a cardboard mirror template...ImageImage

A free hand template out of some scrap panel an elliptical router jig would be ideal... But the clock is ticking!... So a bit of sculpting... Image

Cutting off the bulk of the inside waste and corners for glue up ..

Image

Deadline looms!

Onward

The scale and positioning of the round legs looks just right to me; very 60s.

Is there any way you can brace them?

I thought they were a touch too skinny myself... Keeping the round leg design would have been nice tho. A curved stretcher would do it but the form work and into a taper felt a little envolved, perhaps in conjunction with an apron also... Maybe next time

Actually Jimmy, just to be helpful I like the square section you have shown, with the triangular brace under the drawer. To my eye at least the round ones look too spindly. Fine perhaps for a consol table, but not for something more substantial. Might tapering the square leg improve it further?

Thanks Roger not sure if it's too heavy... Though the scorching will create a slimming effect. I've tapered the leg but to just one face (side view)

A few catch up shots...

Legs
ImageImage

Initially I made the stool a bit too small imoImageImageImage

So I extended it using the insert (note glass) as a design clue. I drew half the shape on some 3mm ply, hand shaped and used this to template route the maple from. ImageImage

Taper jig

Buttons...

Stool topImageImage

Scorched and ebonised components

Getting closer...

I've a soft, black suede seat to make... Then I'm almost there

I like the rectangular legs much better than the spindle ones, looking very nice.

Here's the seat, now I've only a rough idea of upholstery, if I was being paid I'd probably source it out to a friend ... So feel free to point out any goofs ! (That goes for anything tbf, I can take it ) ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Think it turned out ok, the black line of the seat is very unforgiving, so a subtle bump or two...and the underside is a *bit of a dog's dinner... Almost forgot to knock off the arrises on the seat backer!... The white polyester is to even out and act as a 'lubricant', I believe it's called I stretched the seat and stapled the same way as you'd stretch an art canvas, splitting opposites - iykwim

Using some of the spare suede I've double sided taped it to some art mount before hot melt gluing in.

I can almost smell the finish line... Cheers Image
