Small Bowl

Postby Woodbloke » 11 Mar 2019, 16:16

A small bowl turned in yellow and green Ancient or Swamp Kauri, with unusual 'whitebait' streaks; made from the core of a much larger one. Wet and dry sanded to 1500g and finished with three coats of shellac and raw linseed oil, finally burnished with 0000 wire wool.

...near the larger bowl made by Rick Taylor in New Zealand just before Christmas. The little one will be used to display a selection of polished jade pebbles which is the next job in the 'shop - Rob

When you said small you meant it. Nice little bowl and looks just right amongst the other pieces

Any particular reason for your choice of finish, it looks effective

It's the one I was shown by Rick in NZ. I don't know if it's better than anything else but these are the stages.
Firstly, apply some shellac, let it dry and then burnish using the same cloth with the lathe spinning. Then apply a coat of linseed oil and cut that back with 0000g wire wool. This process is repeated three times to get the level of finish required. Rick mentioned that bowls he'd made over thirty years ago still looked the same as the day he finished them, but he also said that this finish isn't durable if say, the bowl were to be used for fruit or salad stuff - Rob
