Small project

Postby MY63 » 01 Jul 2019, 12:33

I had not expected to make anything in my small workshop until it was finished but when I was asked to help someone convert an antique small chest of drawers to hold fountain pens.

I am by no means an expert sometimes I wonder if I am actually proficient but there you go. In posting this I am asking for constructive criticism to help me to improve.

I don't have the drawers just measurements so I have decided to stay 2 mm clear of the sizes given Sapele was chosen as the original is mahogany.

I used the mitre saw to cut the timber to length and mitre the ends having already routed a channel for the base to slot into.

I used masking tape to hold everything together while the glue set.

All 8 trays finished they are not perfect for some reason 2 are 1 mm smaller than the others I guess only I will see them all together like this as each one goes in a different drawer.

To get the diameter of slot required and the number of pens per tray I had to remove some material from the edges that would become the back and bottom. So pleased I listened to those who suggested I get a bandsaw. :D

I am going to lay fine suede over this wooden insert I have made but it is not quite smooth enough yes I could spend hours sanding it. but little lumps and bumps show through. I use this card and form it to the shape and apply the suede to it and then stick the card to the wood. It is a faff and takes time but it works.

I use dowels to help me to shape all sorts of things it is great for this.

I need a fool proof finish for the Sapele I was planning on waxing it but if anyone has a better suggestion I would appreciate it.

Proper job, Michael!

Using the Mitre saw to cut the sides and ends of the boxes means that you must use a stop, rather than measured marks, for the sides and another for the ends to make sure that not only are the sides and ends in one draw the same, but also if you want more drawers to be the same. I hope that helps and might be the reason you have slightly different sizes.

I like that method of using the card and suede for the drawer tray linings. Cunning it is - Rob

Not dissimilar from Custard's method over on UKW. I followed his method for suede when lining a box and some small drawers but adapted it for self adhesive felt and it works very well indeed.

Another method for the pen holders might be to use a flocking kit - available on the bay and elsewhere.

ISTR Mailee* using it for a cutlery canteen he made.

Bob

Has anyone heard from Mailee recently? I recall he gave up self employment in woodwork possibly for a better work/life balance but he has slipped off my radar since.

I’m no expert either Michael but you method of inserting drawer bottoms bothers me. It is more common not to have a groove for the bottom in the drawer back. Instead the back is cut flush with the grooves on the side so that the bottom can be slid in after glue up then then tacked or screwed in place. Least that’s how I do it. Hope that makes sense.

Have you made the new guides for the BS yet?
I do not think therefore I do not am.

Thanks Malcolm I did not use a stop block I thought you could only use them on the other side of the blade something about trapping the wood between the blade and the stop. Clearly I could be wrong.

Bob I am not sure who custard is but most box makers use card to mount their suede wet glue can show through suede so I use spray adhesive on the card only. Flocking is not for me but thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Andy I wish I was as quick fitting the new guides to the band saw as the French and English postal services were in getting them here :D.
These are not drawers they are trays to fit in drawers and they may be used as a show case for pens I ave not fixed the bottoms in place so they can move.

I missed the final image from my first post so here it is the suede on its card backing

One of the things I have noticed is that my temporary workbench is causing me some issues with my lower back. I have the MFT top on the other end of the bench which I can use without issue. I think for the leather working side I will be making higher benches.

Nice job Michael. I think you can consider that suede idea nicked for a forthcoming job I have lined up when that "round tuit" finally gets delivered. Thanks for explaining.

I can’t imagine why anyone would have so many fountain pens but the batch production and methods look very well executed.

This is only for his smaller pens 80 spaces is not quite enough but they fit in the antique chest of drawers he has.

Thanks

Very nice, Michael. It strikes me that this would make the basis of a nice cutlery canteen/ box, which I'll have to get around to doing one day.

It is funny you should say that Mike as empty cutlery canteens are very popular for converting to hold fountain pens.
I did this one a couple of years ago it did have a lid which had the owners monogram embossed into the suede.
