Pluvial precipitation.

Postby SamQ aka Ah! Q! » 10 Aug 2019, 18:17

We are now in our fourth or fifth straight day of rain, the like of which I last witnessed in the foothills of the Himalaya, above Manali, at the start of the Monsoon. I am also recalling RogerS's plaintive 'signature line': "Gawd, make it stop raining", ( or similar), and just wondering: " does anybody else think this present di-hydrogen oxide vertical descent period is extreme?".
I'm 30 miles north of NewKassle ( as they pronounce it in the Eldon Centre) and aware of damage further south, but I'm still finding our share from the Diety's P#ss Pot just a bit generous....

We are in the same "boat" at the coast Sam we have had biblical rain here no flooding as we live on a hill.
It was still 18 to 20 degrees in the rain.

Our waterfall was spectacular. The culvert underneath the drive blocked. Torrent down the drive sweeping all before, down the footpath (tee hee...that'll teach 'em to go walking) which was under about 6 inches. Never seen anything like it since we've been here.

"Biblical". Exactly. With mountaineering as my sport, I've been out in many weathers and as such, have had to be more aware of meterology than most 'punters' ...but...it is the sustained intensity, size of drop, damage to soil surface etc that is exercising my surprise. This last week has been something else.

We had that round out way a couple of weeks ago. Although the rain didn’t appear that heavy it was really ‘wet rain’ with massive drops. I went out to play football and was soaked to the skin inside 30 seconds. The wettest of rain!

A few short videos.

The path and washed away drive

Our waterfall in full spate. Yesterday it was about 50% bigger. Love to harness all that energy.

And on the other side of the path this channel is flowing well...put in when the house was built all those years ago. The sound in the background is the waterfall

And down in the gorge the river is flowing fast as I've ever seen it

I have no idea why there is all that white space between the videos

I have not been great recently so retired early last night and decided to watch a guy on you tube restoring a a classic sailing boat (Tally Ho). My wife asked me why I was watching a guy building a boat.
Being a smart a**** I replied
"If it keeps raining we are going to need one"

Just heard that RAF Spadeadam was the wettest place in the UK on Saturday. One month's rain in one day.

We are within spitting distance of Spadeadam ! Explains a lot

Finally got out to mow and dig last night and today. Soil weighed SO much more than normal per spadeful, clogged with moisture. Noticeable loss of particles at the surface too, with stones showing clearly through. Sheesh. All that soluble nutrient leached away or down...

Hi Sam I don't know what you are digging but I bought a £50 mini tiller from Screwfix for our small lawn area I wanted to turn over.

Michael, I was down in Brizzle few months back and the Screwfix one I bought my son would not even start! The Lidl.one though, ran like a champ until it hit that ghastly yellow-grey clay that Bristol specialises in. I have debated borrowing the wee beastie from Tim to re-level my terraced ( think rice plantation in Burma) lawn, but 5 hours each way is s little extreme? I did break my graipe clean in half, belatedly discovering woodworm...but my contoured front lawn area is small, maybe 25sqm, so turning it by hand will do.me good.

Thanks, Sam.
