Cutlist Optimizer

I think this video of how to use a free online service is really useful.

It allows you to create a cut list from whatever size sheet you want to cut from.

I haven't used it yet, but I will give it a try next time I'm back inside my 'shop.

I've followed this chap since he started his channel. I found it quite useful.

I'm a big fan of cutlist but no good for you mac types so this online one which is hopefully platform non specific is interesting.
Hopefully if I remember, I'll give it a go for my next project.

One tip - not particularly earth shattering but handy is if you want to optimise over length only you can set all the width of the parts the same and just narrower than the stock width and Robert is your mothers brother.

I've just used https://www.cutlistoptimizer.com/ to calculate the sheets needed for the verandah roof over the workshop deck.

I know I had to work out roughly what the common denominators were to make up a 2400 x1200 sheet, but I fed them in and it took seconds to show me where all the cut lines should be and that my calculations of the number of sheets was correct with minimal wastage.

And I know I should be able to do all that with a pencil and piece of paper, but this old head is getting worn out these days. :eusa-violin:

It's a great piece of software, I use it for every project and quotation.
The other good use for it is to use up all your offcuts, after every few projects I do a stock take of what I've got left and feed the dimensions into Cutlist to see if I can use any of it up without having to buy another full sheet.

One thing I've been wondering though, is there a way to import data straight from an excel spreadsheet so I don't have to manually input all the dimensions?

I can't find a way to do that, Will, however, I've seen other optimizer applications that can import from Excel.

I've been doing some research and there is a way by saving your data as a CSV file (Comma Separated Values)

I've done a bit of experimenting and it works to a point but it isn't importing the part labels.
I'll do some more playing about and report back if I have any success.

I recently did a benchmark with CutList Optimizer against https://workshop-buddy.com/. The video is below.

I tend to use Max cut which seems to do the job but never compared it to others.

A nice facility which would help would be to keep track of the part sheets left from one job to potentially use on the next one. eg keep track of stock not starting with a full sheet each time.

This is a great idea - I'll see if I can make this happen

Hi Bob - thanks for your note and yes, I'm the developer. I was trying to make an impartial comparison, but I completely understand your point and will be more conscious of the rules.

I would really like to make a tool which has feedback from experienced woodworkers, and I thought your forum would be a good place to start

Keep up the good work!

Your video showed an acceptable level of impartiality hence why I approved it.
Your post was on topic and contributed to an existing discussion.
If posts from others can help you develop your products features then I'm supportive of that.
Good Luck

I dont know if cutlist does other things than sheets, but i use this for linear cuts

https://www.kurraglenindustries.com.au/ ... ulator.htm

put in your lengths of stock (2x4s etc.) and number
put in your parts and voila!
