Any decorators about?

Postby Deejay » 12 Oct 2019, 07:10

Morning all.

The picture below shows the result of giving one of my ceilings a fresh coat of good quality emulsion paint.

The existing layer of paint has started to peel off in patches.

I suspect that when the house was built the Artex finish wasn't primed but given one coat of 'full strength' paint.

I now have another ceiling to paint. Any suggestions how to avoid this happening again?

Would a priming coat of diluted PVA help?

Cheers

Dave

Dave,
How did you prep that artex before painting? I always thought that sort of peeling was as a result of the paint not adhering properly to a dirty or dusty surface.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I’d over plaster board it & skim it, you could try a coat of pva but it makes emulsioning over a pita.

I think you're on a hiding to nothing TBH.

Plasterboard over it, skim it then paint it.

I'd also carefully ( as in fully masked up) scrape off a tiny piece of Artex and get it analysed to see if it contains that nasty type of asbestos.

But it's the existing layer that's peeling off, Doug.

Morning Andy

I don't know if the builders did it or if it was done by one of the previous owners, but when I moved in the ceiling had already been painted. I suspect it's the lack of preparation which caused the peeling when I applied another coat.

Morning all

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately, overboarding isn't an option. I'm doing the hall, stairs and landing. All the doors upstairs have fanlights. The top edges of the fanlights are finished with quarter round beading over the plasterboard / fanlight frame join. To make a decent job of it I'd have to remove the existing ceilings and replace them.

There is a good chance that the Artex contains asbestos, given that the house was built about 1980. The usual advice for asbestos in existing buildings is to leave it alone unless it's breaking up. The Artex itself is stable, so it will stay there.

Zinsser BIN ? A new one to me Roger but it looks like a good idea. It may be that there are a few unpainted 'holes' in the existing coat which allow moisture to get behind it and make it 'curl'. It didn't happen everywhere, just a few isolated spots. I'll look into it.

Cheers

I suspect that it is moisture from the new emulsion causing the the old to lift. Allowing to dry back thoroughly then the zinsser bin should work well
I’ve used their primer on a difficult surface and it is good stuff. Whatever you use to seal it, stay away from water based products.
Good luck

That happened to me as well; I got round the problem by scraping back all the old peeling surface, then painting the affected area with white gloss undercoat followed with the proper emulsion - Rob

I have successfully striped Artex with a steam wallpaper stripper and a scraper. The artex went soft when hot. It took a long time and a lot of effort. I am aware of the potential for asbestos but there was no dust, however you need to do your own risk assessment.

Afternoon folks

Undercoat for gloss paint, overpainted with emulsion sounds like a possibility.

I have a steam stripper and there is a small piece of 'ceiling' over the stairs/under the bedroom, parallel to the stair strings. It's easy to get at so I might try stripping that. If it all goes pear shaped, that bit could easily be overboarded.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Thinned emulsion then the usual coat. I've had exactly the same thing happen. Providing you dont look at it you will never notice it.

Morning Coley

That's what I decided when it happened before :-)

I cant unsee it again now looks like my artex fell right off. In a few places I tried patching it with a textured paste but I think it ended up looking worse than just leaving it bare. Yours will look much better than my effort
