Wood Store Rebuild

Postby Dalboy » 13 Feb 2020, 14:40

Not a workshop build but wood storage.

Lost the roof of the wood store in the winds. Myself and the wife spent two days emptying it and jamming it into the other store, I just hope I don't want any out of that one until this store is rebuilt.

Even though it was the roof that was taken after emptying it I can see where years of being up that it would be better to completely rebuild the whole thing.

Wood ordered and now delivered this morning the new roof material will arrive tomorrow. I will be giving all the wood some treatment before assembling then all it will need is the normal retreatment every year

Now all I really need is some nice fine dry weather :eusa-think:

This is the new flatpack now where is part A.

Well managed to get onto the rebuild now that the wind has dropped and the rain stopped.
At least today managed to make a start on the biggest panel.

Layed out the frame and screwed together squared it up and held it with a diagonal brace while I got most of the feather edge on. Brace removed and the rest of the feather edge completed.

I was going to spray all the parts but decided to spray panels as they are finished. This one will need to dry before spraying but at least it is finished as far as construction is concerned. I will be putting three or four blocks on the bottom for when we move it as the feather board protrudes 1/2" below the bottom frame. Not worried about the feather board colours as the finish will bring it all to the same colour.

The next piece will be the solid end and then the two doors before constructing the other end I need a door to double-check my measurements as this is being made as I go and not to a plan. I know the sizes without a drawing.

A picture of the roof before the rebuild when I initially built this store I was very much a novice and looking back should have put more supports in the roof.

Another panel made this time one end which still needs the top cutting along the slope and the finish applied. The last picture you can just about see the line I need to cut to

Thank you Andy.

Today started on the other end piece with the door frame.

I used the first end piece as a template as I had squared that one up the only difference being is that the bottom member is short and the centre upright has been moved over to the left a bit more.

With all the feather board added but still need to trim the top slope and the piece that goes over the door

The last couple of days been giving all the exterior surfaces a coat of finish no pictures hopefully get the joint and bottom surfaces done tomorrow if the rain stays off.

Sorry, no pictures as watching finish dry is boring.

Once the finish is applied I will make the doors for it. Then it will be a case of clearing the last of the old one away and erecting this one. Luckily I have some people who are willing to help move these panels into place just need to get a dry and wind-free day.

At last the panels have the finish on and dry. They have just dried before it started to rain again. Now all I need is a dry day no wind and someone to help put it up. How lucky will I be to get all three at the same time

Doing what you do, Derek, I'd have been tempted to do hit-and-miss walling, to allow air flow through the store whilst still keeping it dry. This would allow you to season timber in there.

That’s a good idea Mike. Even leaving just a few boards off to allow the air to blow through would be good.

Thank you Mike.

This is for the dry wood it also stores a few other bits, the other store has plenty of ventilation for the wood that needs seasoning.

I am fortunate in that I have two wood stores a workshop and a small shed as well as a large green house.

And the small shed is for the wife to keep the gardening things in

Have not posted much on the progress of the wood store rebuild but I have got one of the two doors completed. Today being the first day of no rain and little wind I have dismantled what is left of the old shed and cleaned the decks for the new one to go up.
I have stopped for yet another break as I have to do this in small spurts due to my health, that is why I am able to post this.
By the end of the day I should have most of it assembled, at least the end is getting very close which means that I can empty some of the other sheds and conservatory. This also means some much-needed turning time as I am getting withdrawal symptoms.
I will try to post some pictures later on

Yet another day on the rebuild with the promise of rain by midday I did not expect to get much done but was hoping that I could at least get the gutter and roof battens on. But luck was on my side and I even managed to get the roof sheets on as well.
Now all I need to do is build the last remaining wall and door. I have placed the old rack in there but it needs a couple of pieces of wood replacing before it is filled up again.

Now I am really feeling the end is close the last side made today after having to fight the silly shoppers for the weekly shop, at least with a tool shop there is something worth looking at.

Did not put the finish on as the feather boards are too wet so decided to assemble and fix in place.

The shelf unit is back in properly now ready to be restocked from all the hiding places.

Taking a day off tomorrow at the turning club then Sunday onwards I will get the door complete and if lucky start moving everything back and then back to normal.

Thank you Malcolm

Today got the downpipe fitted for the gutter. And then started to move in some of the wood. I have decided to leave the turning blanks in the other store and move mainly the flatwood into this one. Also things like part turned bowls, LV bowling balls burrs and exotic woods.

Still need to apply the finish to this panel and door. I will be sorting the wood out into wood types rather than having to hunt for a piece.

You really are very organised Derek.

Is this a walk-though, lean-to shed built upto your boundary?

Very close to the boundary with enough room to recoat when needed. Yes, it is a walkthrough.
I still need to get organised just put the wood in there to clear other places so I could at least get into those. I will be getting all wood types in some sort of order so that Oaks are all together and so on
