I forgot that; indeed it was and I believe it was some RAF mechanic who first dreamed up the idea of switching the original under-powered Allison engine for a RR Merlin; eventually they were designated Packard-Merlins as they were built in the USA - Rob

The War Department were buying planes from all the place. Anything that flew was bought.
There’s a video on YouTube about the “forgotten” planes and the conversions of others to other duties.

Yes I read that and thought it stank. How the Hell does a venture capital company get its grubby mitts on providing masks? Oh yes..The adviser recommending the purchase is also an adviser to the company. But Hey Liz Truss is the Minister involved. Liz Truss who makes two short planks positively Mensa candidates.

Pah!

Amen. Her time as Environment Whatchacallit was stunning for its inertia and failure to protect our environment properly. Nearly as much fun as my final years of teaching under Gove's 'initiatives'. Just HOW can the terminally thick and pliant-to-personal-financial-gain get SO far into positions of control? Has the art of discernment and character judgement been lost? I came across this very clever GIF that shows the increase/decrease of infections in certain key areas by date.

With the usual caveat about comparing data from different countries..
UK infection rate 18.5 per 100,000
France infection rate 32.1

Yet France will reciprocate the quarantine, purely political.

Ho hum.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

I think that's a tad mean Roger. These 'hot spots' seem to pop up anywhere at will with no rhyme nor reason as to their location. It could equally have been any one of a bazillion locations around the UK where one employee got infected at a different location and inadvertently passed it on at work. Moi personally don't think it's anything to do with working conditions at the plant; it's just one of those things that happened. It won't be the last either - Rob

These "hot spots" always seem to occur at food processing units. There is some research that shows that whilst Covid19 survives for just a couple of hours on a hard surface at 20C, it can last for several days on a surface at 4C. Hence the worry about a 2nd wave in winter. With refrigeration in these places, I wonder how much that has to do with them being the centre of outbreaks?

300 is not a 'pop up'. It's negligence. If they had proper social distancing and PPE protection or relevant measures...then that number would never have happened.

:text-+1:

Goes some way to explaining why this thing seems to 'pop up' at food processing plants regardless of whether it's M&S or nae; it happened in Germany a while back. Doesn't seem to bode well for the winter months  - Rob

My builder has experienced all sorts of problems with our extension - bad weather, covid etc.
With covid lots of subcontractors went on furlough especially the plumbers he normally used.
The one he eventually found seemed to do a good job, very friendly and got on with the work quite quickly. It was finished about a month ago but when we tested it recently we found that the cold water supply didn’t work properly.
The plumber refused to come back and sort it, so the builder got the advice of two other plumbers who both said it was a complete b***s up.
Looks like we might be going to the small claims court?

New plumber extensively amended the system and it all works perfectly.

Regarding the TUI flight. Leaving aside the negligence of the cabin crew for not enforcing the wearing of masks, I struggle to understand why we pussyfoot around. If the cabin crew ask you to put your mask on and you don't then the solution is simple. You're banned from flying. For life. Maybe the Covidiots will get the message then ?

Until Covid came along we used to fly 4 or 5 return flights a year, and it never ceased to amaze me how simple and clear instructions were ignored by so many passengers. Seat belts on? Seat backs upright? electronic devices off? Applies to everyone else but not me, so I'll ignore and carry on regardless!!

The buck stops with the captain, whose word is law - quite literally. Passengers were told to wear masks several times before boarding, and again as they boarded, and again as part of the pre-flight safety briefing. When they failed to do so, they should have one personal reminder and then the cabin manager should report the issue to the captain. The captain should have reminded passengers of their obligation to abide by the airline's rules. Anyone still failing to follow instructions should be put on a "no fly" list. Apparently not only were many passengers not wearing masks, but they were wandering around the cabin - also contrary to instructions - without wearing masks and chatting to other passengers.

Crass, arrogant and ignorant passengers, a weak cabin manager and a weak captain.

Guess it depends as to whether their captain was aware of the situation. From what I can gather because there was limited cabin service, the cabin crew spent most of the flight behind the curtains chatting. TBH I blame TUI as clearly they did not have a 'Mask monitor' as it were.

But before doing that, land at the nearest airport and chuck 'em off the flight.
