spiral cutter planer/thicknesser Delivered today

Here's the place to talk about all your table saws, bandsaws, routers and dust extractors. In fact anything that makes noise and uses electrickery.

spiral cutter planer/thicknesser Delivered today

Postby Robert » 27 Sep 2018, 15:29

Just changed the blades on my planer thicknesser. Weather is OK today so I'm a bit scared to use it due to my wife complaining about the noise it makes! Think I'll wait for bad weather when no neighbours are in their gardens. Never had a complaint but as it is loud with ear defenders on I'll wait.

So I've read about these spiral cutters that make less noise and don't need the messing about I've just done to fit replacements.

I don't need any bigger than I have now... I just need quieter and better.

This seems to be the cheapest/smallest offering around.

The digital readout is a cyclometer type device which looks the same as the one supplied by Jet for the early model of the 260 when users complained of the table slipping with vibration.

This did not fix the problem, but simply recorded it was happening. You might recall that I made a retrofit locking device and supplied these to quite a few users.

Jet then fixed the problem with a design change. Depends if Itech have adopted the early jet design or the later one.

I have a spiral cutter fitted to my Hammer and it's great...much, much quieter.

Think it was pictures of your Hammer machine that started me thinking.

Has anyone heard of itech?

Remarkably similar to the AXI spiral job. Somewhat cheaper at £1400 now. Never the less with the spiral blades it is less noisy just wait til you have to work some wild grain timber like yew, this tell you it was worth the extra.

I never had that problem. But then I cheated ! It's called "planing/thickessing by drum sander"

I have bought iTech table saw. It is functional and much better than my previous Record, but needs a little fettling.

The supplier did not score highly for me.

Doesn't take me long to make up my mind does it? Started this thread 2 years ago.

Just clicked buy on a Axminster Trade AT260SPT Spiral Planer Thicknesser along with a mobile base for a few coppers short of 2k. Out of stock with a 3 week lead time according to the site but wouldn't surprise me if it was longer.

Image

The Itech is cheaper but is also out of stock and quotes 40+ days.

Just blunted the blades on my P/T on this hard and heavy probably Afzelia flooring I bought on ebay recently. I'll fit new blades and leave it ready to sell. It did cut OK for a reasonable time so carbide insert cutters should have no trouble. That was yesterday and no Ill effects on me from working with the wood so definitely not Iroko - or it doesn't effect me.

When these things first came out, I was working at Ax in the office upstairs and Keith Thompson (just retired) sauntered over with a lump of freshly planed wood and asked...''what do think of that then Rob?'' to which I replied ''I know what that is Keith, it's a bit of wood''

The wood is question though, had just been put through the first of the spiral cutter blocks that Ax had just got hold of and the finish was superlative. I was suitably impressed - Rob

Every now and then I wonder about getting the conversion kit for my Delta four post thicknesser but get very good results from conventional knives and I tend to consign difficult grained wood to the thickness sander so it might be better to convert the Jet Planer?
I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure....

On the Axminster site it has gone from out of stock expected to be available in 3 weeks (as when I ordered) to expected in 1 week so maybe I might get it sooner. No delivery date from Ax yet.

Out of curiosity I was looking at the price of the carbide insert cutters. Axminster are about £60 odd for 10 and where I've been buying planer blades (woodford woodturnings?) they are £30 odd for 10.

Big difference but is there a big difference in quality? Hopefully be a very long time until i need to find out.

Priced by the ten, but presumably you need dozens of the things when the time comes.

You should be able to get inserts much cheaper than that shopping around.
I pay less than half that for smaller quatities for my metalwork machining.

I did look at the time but couldn't see any rounded square ones anywhere just straight sided that are not compatible. I was probably looking in the wrong place and I don't have a part number to search for.

They will be somebodys standard size, shape and carbide grade. Axi would not have commissioned a custom type. Once you have the oem specification, then there will likely be clones out there.
Relative to metal turning/milling, wood planing will not require a high performance carbide grade.

As Wallace says.... there are four sides to a blade....each blade being about 20mm square. A lot of them !

I'm still on 'edge 1' of the original blades.

It's heavy!

Told it would arrive lunchtime today so went shopping early back at 10.45 ... 10 minutes later Axminster at the door.

Driver dropped it just outside the workshop door so it was on my removable ramp over the threshhold.

So I start dragging it in on my own.

Slowly does it

Once past half way I could go outside and push. Skids nicely on that flooring I bought.
Image

The Reveal. Packing case ply was all a bit cheap and nasty so no bonus there. The pallet is all plywood too. Even the skids are stacks of ply.

Fence and arm for the guard were inside

Currently contemplating the next problem. How to suspend 200+ kg and lower it safely.

Think it is going to involve timber battens and a car jack or two but not going to rush this.
