As promised, pictures of one of my favourite pieces

This is where we don't want anything but evidence of your finest wood butchering in all its glorious, and photograph laden glory. Bring your finished products or WIP's, we love them all, so long as there's pictures, and plenty of 'em!

As promised, pictures of one of my favourite pieces

As promised on my initial post this is a visitor book stand for my local Arts and heritage centre, which you may have seen before it was on a program that Sarah Beanie did on community buildings/renovations. There were four? originally, and as far as I know this is the only one still going, we all work quite hard to keep it that way.
The second photograph is of the front of the building and shows the inspiration for the design of the piece.
The actual design came to me in a flash in about five minutes of being asked, it is laminated and is made from European oak and mahogany. Ian

And I thought I had done so well working out how to put the photos up. Oh well you’ll just have to turn your head slightly haha

Oh that is classy. Thanks for sharing.

Image rotated for you Ian
**Photos taken on Apple devices have an annoying habit of not rotating properly when viewed on non apple platforms.
For best results take all your photos in landscape view with the volume control button at the bottom of the camera. If you have photos that have been taken in other orientations, then try bringing them into iPhoto and uploading them to the forum from there.
I do not think therefore I do not am.

cheers

My goodness, that's fine. One stumbling granny and you'll get commissioned for a re-build. It could be a good money earner   It's lovely work, though.

I designed a garden wall for a cottage on a sharp bend in a country lane, and it gets rammed most winters. The builder who built it gets to rebuild it pretty regularly, and the insurance rates for the work are pretty healthy.

Thanks Mike, thankfully no stumbling grannies, it’s now 10? Years old.
Nice work for the builder!

Think of the difficulty of the final clean up on this job. The 4 arches will have been made individually first, glued up and cleaned up a bit. Then, the problem starts. After being trimmed to a final length they would then be glued together, and the whole thing becomes a big weak 3D object. Running a plane along the join would be really difficult, especially on the outside 2 faces, because of the difficulty in sitting it on a flat surface, and the lack of an end to rest up against a stop. I think I would have used a scraper for much of it, but that's not trouble-free on narrow pieces. The more you think about it, the more difficult it becomes!

Thank you for all your nice comments gentlemen, yes it was a bit of a challenge, when I laminate I always hand plane all the strips paying particular attention to the outside two, and when it is glued up between two formers there is often very little to be done on those outside sides, I seem to remember that after I had got most of the glue off from the laminated edge I put them through the thicknesser. The one time that I steam bent a piece of wood I took the trouble to plane the inside face prior to steaming – that’s really paid off and I will do it again.
A mistake some people make when making the former is to make just one cut in which ever piece of material they are making the former from. In actual fact they should have two lines drawn indicating the thickness of the final piece they are making, that way the glue lines are very small indeed. Ian

I’m sorry I didn’t take any pictures when I was making it, I do now when I make something. This is a close-up shot and also a picture of a music stand base.
